Medical Specialist - Internal Medicine

The BVI Health Services Authority (a client-centered healthcare organization) invites qualified and professional applicants for the position of Medical Specialist (Internal Medicine). This post evaluates and manages common and complex communicable and non-communicable diseases in adult populations in the community clinics and assigned public health facilities of the BVIHSA community.  Participates in multi-disciplinary teams to ensure comprehensive management of clinical conditions managed as out-patients.  Participates in disaster and emergency response.  Provide leadership and consultation to medical officers (general practitioners, specialist registrars) in the out-patient management of patients.  Participates in ensuring and promoting best clinical practice and effective delivery of services. Participate in the evaluation, development and implementation of community health programs.  Participate in the professional development of all clinical staff, medical support staff and allied health staff.  Participate in health promotion and health education programs within the community. 

PRIMARY DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES (included but not limited to):

Clinical Duties:

  1. Diagnose, treats and manages acute medical conditions and chronic communicable and non-communicable medical conditions, requiring specialty care in community clinics and or public health facilities
  2. Provides leadership and participates in multi-disciplinary teams in the out-patient management of patients in the community
  3. Completes medical procedures, as appropriate, in out-patient setting
  4. Provides consultation and supervision to medical officers and ‘specialist’ registrars
  5. Liaise with hospitalist and other specialists in the management and continuity of care of patients.
  6. Provide on-call consultation, when appropriate, to medical staff
  7. Maintain current licensure, continuing medical education requirements and certifications in advanced life support.

Administrative Duties:

  1. Collaborates in the development of protocols and procedures that enhance the delivery of quality, best practice medical care. Performs other duties and tasks as assigned from time to time by management.
  2. Participates in clinical committees that manage patients
  3. Supervises specialist registrars
  4. Participates in the supervision of medical officers, nursing staff, emergency technicians, paramedics and medical support staff

Minimum Requirements:

 

Educational/Training Requirements

v  Bachelor of Medical and Surgery (MBBS)/ Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (DO)/Medical Doctor (MD)

v  Doctor of Medicine (DM) in Internal Medicine or Completion of Accredited Residency program

v  Royal Colleges Membership and or Fellowship, with at least three (3) years post membership in a training position at a teaching institutions.

Experience

v  At least three (3) years post DM, or Completion of Accredited Residency program (with recommendations from consultants)

Licenses/Certifications

v  United States (US) or Canadian State Board Certified

v  Royal College Membership and or Fellowship

v  Caribbean Association of Medical Councils Certificate

v  Registration (and good standing) with Medical Board from country of origin

v  Registration with the BVI Medical and Dental Council

v  Membership with Medical Defense Organization/Insurance Coverage for negligence and medical malpractice.

v  Basic Life Support (BLS), Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) (or equivalent)

SALARY: Commensurate with qualifications and experience.
