LEGAL OFFICER

 The Trinidad and Tobago Trade and Investment Promotion Agency Limited (Global Trinidad and Tobago) is currently seeking qualified nationals to fill the position of Legal Officer. The Legal Officer is responsible for providing legal services and advice to the Agency in accordance with local and international best practice standards relating to the Agency’s contractual agreements and other business related transactions. They also provide legal advice and support to the Corporate Secretary, to advise on documentation associated with contracts, products/services and legal commitments of the Agency.

 Key Responsibilities

  • Provide expert legal advice and interpretation services to ensure the Agency's compliance with all statutory and regulatory requirements
  • Draft, review, and vet a wide range of legal documents, including contracts, Cabinet Notes, memoranda, and policies
  • Provide dedicated support to the Corporate Secretary and the Board of Directors, including attending committee meetings as Assistant Secretary
  • Prepare accurate and comprehensive minutes for Board and Committee meetings and coordinate the implementation of action items
  • Manage the Agency's response to requests filed under the Freedom of Information Act
  • Liaise with external counsel, government bodies (including the Office of the Attorney General), and other key stakeholders
  • Monitor legal and regulatory developments and advise Executive Management on potential impacts to the Agency's operations
  • Review and draft corporate governance documents, including policies, procedures, and handbooks, to align with best practices
  • Support foundational intellectual property matters and provide guidance on disciplinary and industrial relations issues
  • Prepare and present detailed reports, updates, and analyses on legal and regulatory issues for senior management

 Qualifications and Experience

  • Bachelor of Laws Degree (LLB) from a recognised university
  • Legal Education Certificate (LEC) or equivalent
  • Admission to practise Law in Trinidad and Tobago
  • Training in corporate governance would be an asset Or

Any equivalent combination of experience and training

  • 3-4 years’ experience as a practising Attorney-at-Law with demonstrated proficiency in providing corporate secretarial services, legal advice, reviewing cases and performing duties as an Attorney-at- Law
  • 2-3 years’ corporate governance experience in public sector enterprise
  • Experience in public sector procurement rules and regulations an asset

 Desired Competencies 

  • Knowledge of contract drafting
  • Knowledge of and experience with financial regulatory laws, regulations and acts
  • Knowledge of the laws and regulations pertinent to the operations of the Trade and Investment Agency
  • Knowledge of Industrial Relations
  • Time management skills
  • Project and task management and prioritisation skills
  • Communication and interpersonal skills
