Department of Computing, University of the West Indies, Mona, Jamaica

The history of the computing programme at the University of the West Indies (Mona) spans almost 4 decades. Throughout this time, we have been preparing students for the rapidly changing world of computing by equipping them with the skills and knowledge to readily adapt to those changes. Our programmes expose students to the theoretical underpinnings of computing, while still requiring them to apply that knowledge in practical and tangible ways which solve real problems. By the time our students graduate, they have been well prepared for any computing related pursuit, ranging from an IT related job to furthering their studies in a postgraduate programme.

Today, the Department of Computing is home to about 400 undergraduate students and approximately 80 postgraduate students. Our MSc programme is currently the largest and fastest growing programme in the Faculty of Science and Technology. All of our students are taught by a full-time academic staff of 10, complimented by a competent cadre of part-time staff. In addition to their teaching responsibilities, members of our academic staff have research interests ranging from amorphous computing, data mining, animation and visualization through software engineering to computer networking.

Our undergraduate programme offerings include:

  • Computer Science Major
  • Software Engineering  Major
  • B.Sc. Information Technology (Programme)
