BSc in  Information Technology

 

Programme Overview

The BSc in Information Technology is a three year programme based on the ACM/IEEE recommendations. The programme aims to address the needs of the Caribbean region and produce graduates who are able to address the information processing requirements of organisations.

 

Programme Objectives
The programme aims to:

  • provide IT graduates with the skills and knowledge to take on appropriate professional positions in the IT industry upon graduation and grow into leadership positions or pursue research or graduate studies in the field.

 

  • produce graduates who are able to work effectively at planning, implementing, configuring and maintaining an organisation’s computing infrastructure.

 

Programme Structure

Students must complete a total of  93 credits. 24 level one (first year) credits are required, that is  12 credits from computing + 12 credits from any faculty. An additional 15 computing credits at level two and21  credits at level three are required. There are  6 more elective credits from Computing and 18 credits from any discipline(s) (including Computing).  9 compulsory foundation credits must also be satisfied to complete the programme. The first year of the programme consists of 5 3-credit computing courses – 3 programming courses (in Python and Java), 1 course in essential mathematics for computing and a general computing course – and a similar number of courses from other disciplines of your choice (e.g. math, physics, accounts, economics, etc).

 

Entry Requirements

Applicants should possess 5 CXC or GCE O’level subjects (grades 1-3/A-C, including English Language and mathematics) or their equivalent. The faculty of Science and Technology requires that applicants have  two (2) advanced level GCE or CAPE subjects (2 units each at grades 1-5), to qualify for the full time 3 year degree programme.  For the BSc IT programme we require that one of these advanced level subjects should be  a science subject. A teachers’ college diploma, an associate’s degree in mathematics, information technology or science or a pass in EC1003 (Mathematics for the Social Sciences) will be considered equivalent qualification for persons without CAPE passes.
