The Structural Engineer is responsible for creating cost-effective engineering designs, drawings and related technical information in multidisciplinary engineering teams or in support of project engineers.

JOB SUMMARY

The Structural Engineer is responsible for creating cost-effective engineering designs, drawings and related technical information in multidisciplinary engineering teams or in support of project engineers.  The Structural Engineer also ensures that finished work meets all acceptance criteria and is directly responsible for meeting the Company’s Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) for accuracy, following Client requirements, Damus’ Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), safety and quality standards, codes, specifications and schedules.

KEY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  1. Determine project requirements in collaboration with the Engineering Manager.
  2. Develop detailed structural designs to support projects for Oil and Gas, Petrochemicals, Tank farms and other Industrial facilities.
  3. Conduct complex stress analysis to evaluate the structural capacity of components under various loading conditions.
  4. Optimise designs to achieve cost-effectiveness while maintaining structural integrity.
  5. Perform complex structural analysis using FEA software (e.g. STAADPro) to design steel structures and shells.
  6. Independently perform structural design work.
  7. In collaboration with the Clients and other key stakeholders, develop design briefs as required.
  8. In collaboration with key stakeholders, create cost-effective designs and drawings.
  9. Prepare structural drawings, calculations, and documents detailing design concepts.
  10. Prepare fabrication and connection details for steel structures.
  11. Review or approve fabrication drawings and shop details to ensure structural integrity during construction.
  12. Review and verify third-party/vendor engineering calculations, design documents, and drawings.
  13. Provide technical guidance and support to project engineers and site superintendents.
  14. Investigate and resolve any structural issues that arise during construction.
  15. Manage project deliverables, schedules, and budgets.

 KEY COMPETENCIES / REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE

  • A thorough knowledge of civil/structural design and engineering techniques.
  • Good analytical and mathematical skills.
  • Ability to undertake complex calculations.
  • Strong comprehension of the fundamental principles of structural design to evaluate software output and develops manual benchmarked calculations.
  • Keen eye for detail and a methodical work process.
  • Ability to effectively manage multiple projects, deadlines and budgets.
  • Experience with the preparation of Lift Plans, the design of above-ground storage tanks to API 650, 3D modelling and draughting using AutoCAD, and a Quality Management System is an asset.
  • Creative problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to work with and convey technical concepts to cross-functional teams.
  • Time management, organisation and the ability to work with deadlines.
  • Knowledge of codes and specifications for structural steel (above-ground storage tanks are an asset).
  • Proficient use of Microsoft Office Suite and Adobe Acrobat.
  • Knowledge of ISO 9001, OSH Act 2004 as amended, STOW-TT Minimum HSE Requirements an asset.

QUALIFICATION & EXPERIENCE

Mandatory

  1. Bachelor's degree in Civil or Mechanical Engineering with a focus on Structural Engineering. 
  2. Demonstrated competencies acquired over a minimum of ten (10) years of experience in structural design in petrochemicals or onshore oil and gas industry facilities.
  3. Proficiency in structural analysis software.
  4. Strong understanding of structural mechanics, materials science, stress analysis and design principles. 
  5. Excellent communication and collaboration skills to work effectively with multi-disciplinary teams. 
  6. Design of Steel structures related to Processing facilities, Petrochemicals, Tank farms and other Industrial facilities. 
  7. Ability to manage complex projects under tight deadlines. 
  8. Excellent problem-solving and decision-making abilities.
  9. Ability to self-direct work with limited supervision.
  10. Strong organisational and multitasking capabilities.
  11. Demonstrated ability to lead design projects
  12. Strong written and verbal communication skills with the ability to communicate effectively with clients to understand project requirements, present design solutions, and address technical concerns.
