Job Purpose:                                                                                                     

The Staff Nurse will serve the Caribbean Maritime University community by providing the highest level of nursing care to staff and students; ensuring that quality and practice standards are met at all times; arranging and conducting seminars/webinars as well as teaching sessions on health-related issues and personal development; maintaining medical files of students and staff, referring patients to doctors and other health care providers as necessary.

Key Responsibility Areas:

Technical/Professional Responsibilities

  • Contributes to team efforts by applying knowledge, skills, and expertise for the accomplishment of the overall mandate of the University;
  • Provides nursing care by assessing, treating, or referring staff and students to the appropriate medical institution when required; handling emergencies e.g., Asthmatic attacks, Epileptic seizures, wounds, fractures, burns, menstrual cramps, head injury, trauma;
  • Manages chronic illnesses, providing brief counselling, and making referrals as necessary;
  • Accompanies patient to hospital/physician as is necessary;
  • Communicates with parents/guardians/spouses in cases of emergency and applying first aid when required;
  • Provides counselling and advice to diabetic, hypertensive, and other staff and students with specific health issues;

 

  • Protects individual’s privacy by implementing an appropriate filing system for medical records such as students’ medicals;
  • Maintains confidentiality of personal and health-related information; serving as custodian of health records;
  • Promotes healthy lifestyle by educating and empowering staff and students on the management of Communicable and Non-Communicable diseases. This is done using social media platforms including Microsoft teams, Zoom, group emails, face-to-face classroom teaching sessions, one-on-one interaction;
  • Liaises with various Agencies to plan and execute Healthy Lifestyle events on both campuses e.g., Dental services/pap smear /prostate screening/heart screening/HIV testing/ eye testing, Mobile Clinics;
  • Assists with the conduct of environmental audits and preparing reports with
  • appropriate recommendations;
  • Sets up and manages the First Aid area for special events for e.g., University’s Sports Day, Graduation/Prize giving;
  • Collaborates with Sports department re the planning and execution of health and fitness programmes/clubs for staff and students;
  • Assists with the promotion of healthy school environment by collaborating with Safety staff to ensure the universal Health Standard and protocols and infection control measures are adhered to;
  • Manages public health issues including the reporting of all communicable disease cases for proper investigation from the relevant bodies to limit the spread.
  • Manages any public health crisis on campus;
  •  Conducts routine checks to all departments to ensure that all Covid-19 protocols are adhered to including the wearing of masks, social distancing, anyone with flu-like symptoms to be assessed by a Doctor, and to remain at home;
  • Manages the positive indexes including Covid-19 testing, quarantine, at home monitoring, recovery, and fitness certification for return to work as well as deep cleaning and sanitization of areas;
  • Oversees the maintenance of all sanitization stations, hand washing stations, the full coverage, operation, and maintenance of all temperature guns;
  • Collaborates with the Safety and Maintenance team in carrying out routine inspections of the Canteen facilities and dormitories to determine compliance to acceptable hygienic standards;
  • Identifies and explains the impact of unhygienic conditions; making recommendations on how to mitigate against unhygienic conditions; making recommendations on how to maintain a hygienic environment;
  • Participates in implementing disaster preparedness program at unit level. Verify immunization status of students is up to date
  • Maintains self-development by keeping abreast of emerging trends and technologies in his/her field; maintaining affiliation with relevant professional bodies and to promote the above amongst the staff at all levels.

  • Health care offered to staff and students at the university in keeping with existing policy and within the ambit of a nurse’s legal span of control;
  • Health and welfare seminars held in keeping with the determined needs and health care priority issues for the university’s population within agreed timeframes;
  • Medical records maintained in keeping with existing policies, and standards of good medical record management;
  • Emergency and serious health cases referred to an appropriate and qualified medical practitioner or Institution in accordance with the university’s policies;
  • Stock levels of medical supplies maintained and released in accordance with existing policies, best practices and inventory management requirements;
  • Health centre environs are hygienic and conform to existing health, safety, and security standards;
  • Mental effort and concentration required to make quick decisions in emergencies;
  • Mental effort and concentration required in assigning medical conditions and deciding on appropriate action;
  •      Environmental Condition - Possible exposure to contagious illnesses;
  •  Be proficient in the use of medical instruments such as thermometer, stethoscope, sphygmomanometer, oximeter, glucose machine, nebulizer, oxygen machine.

Minimum Required Qualification and Experience.

  • Registered Nurse
  • At least three (3) years nursing experience
  • Current registration with the Nursing Council of Jamaica as a Registered Nurse
  • Occupational Health & Safety Training desirable
  • Basic Life Support training

  • Treats and refers staff and students as per personal assessment

Special Conditions
