Senior Science Educator

(on contract)

 

Department: Science Education, National Science Centre

Reports to:    Senior Specialist

 

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

1.      Promotes strategic direction of the Science Education Portfolio by developing and preparing work plans.

2.      Contributes to the development of the science education portfolio.

3.      Plans and develops science education programmes inclusive of teachers’ workshops for primary and secondary schools, science outreach programmes, Science Club projects and programmes.

4.      Works with the line ministry to build capacity in science education and related matters.

5.      Establishes linkages with appropriate stakeholder groups.

6.      Keeps abreast of latest developments in the field of science and science education.

7.      Prepares relevant reports, written presentations and other informational material to develop the science education portfolio.

8.      Advises on educational content of exhibits and programmes in  line with current advances in science and societal needs.

9.      Supervises and mentors junior staff.

10.  Organises and stages exhibitions.

11.  Represents NIHERST at national and international meetings and conferences.

12.  Performs other related duties as required.

 

QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE

    • Master’s Degree in a science discipline
    • Certification in STEM education, pedagogy, and curriculum design will be an asset
    • Extensive (8 years minimum) teaching experience in secondary or tertiary institutions
    • A proven record in delivering high quality science instruction across multiple disciplines (biology, chemistry, physics, mathematics, environmental science)
    • Experience in mentoring junior teachers and leading professional development workshops

     OR any equivalent combination of experience and training

 REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS AND COMPETENCIES

  • Knowledge of the philosophy and psychology of education
  • Knowledge of modern principles and techniques of science education
  • Sound knowledge of measurement and evaluation
  • Conversant with current science education reform trends, including policy, research and professional learning design
  • Strong leadership and supervisory skills
  • Ability to foster teamwork
  • Ability to exercise independent judgement and initiative
  • Skill in budget preparation and simple accounting
  • Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing
  • Ability to build and foster relationships and networks with fellow employees and stakeholders
  • Competence in the use of MS Office Suite and relevant specialist computer software
