The Department of Health Services invites suitably qualified applicants to apply for the position of Registered Mental Health Nurse.

MANDATE

Provision of the best available evidence-based care through purposefulness, correctness, facilitation; being supportive and influential in the provision of Mental Health care, utilizing a Secondary Health Care approach. 

KEY FUNCTIONS

  • Assess patients/clients, formulate diagnosis, plan, implement and evaluate care.
  • Provide professionals advice and counseling to public sector health professionals and      patients/clients and their families.
  • Participate in planning and coordinating Psychiatric/Mental Health Services in accordance with the Mental Health Act and Regulations and ensure the development, dissemination and implementation of policies, procedures, standards and programmes.

KEY DUTIES (A FEW)

  • Analyzes and validates data taken from interview of patient and/or family and utilizes this knowledge to formulate appropriate nursing interventions into patient treatment plans.
  • Establishes nursing care objectives and priorities based on the assessments of patients’ needs in relation to long and short term treatment goals involves and directs nursing care personnel in the administration of individual clinical therapy into the total treatment milieu.
  • Participates in formulating, interpreting, implementing and evaluating objectives, quality assurance policies, procedures and standards in nursing.
  • Collaborates with the attending Physician and or Psychiatrist on the appropriate treatment for clients and ensure that prescribed medications are given as ordered.
  • Collaborates with appropriate support personnel in the discharge planning of patients and in the appropriate referral to other mental health resources in the community
  • Participates in the designing and implementation of public awareness campaigns, promotions and the distribution of information as necessary in conjunction with other Stake holders, services and the media.
  • Maintains current knowledge of nursing care practice and informs nursing staff of changes.
  • Utilizes good therapeutic communication skills with patients in all situations and under all circumstances.
  • Adheres to the code of conduct and maintain confidentiality.
  • Investigates reports of complaints, incidents and accidents, report to Coordinator, Mental Health Services so that appropriate corrective actions are taken.
  • Document client progress accurately to maintain a permanent record of client treatment and activity according to established methods and procedures
  • Ensures that patients/clients basic human rights are not violated.

QUALIFICATIONS

The incumbent must possess well developed theoretical and practical knowledge and skills in general nursing and psychiatric/mental health nursing, skills of work methods, information technology, analytical and diagnostic ability, effective research and investigative skills and interpretative judgment as well as an understanding of the economic, social and cultural characteristics of the society. Additionally, the incumbent must possess excellent problem solving skills, interpersonal and communicative skills, human resource management ability, exceptional integrity, exemplary character, be discreet, the ability to work in a team, to gain the confidence, trust and respect of the general public and to maintain strict confidentiality. 

These knowledge and skills are obtained in the acquisition of a Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing, certificate or Degree in Mental Health Nursing together with three (3) years in a similar or related job.
