The Process Engineer supports the design, optimization, and maintenance of water and wastewater treatment processes to ensure reliable, safe, and cost-effective operations.

Job Summary: The Process Engineer supports the design, optimization, and maintenance of water and wastewater treatment processes to ensure reliable, safe, and cost-effective operations. This role involves process analysis, troubleshooting, and continuous improvement of treatment facilities to meet regulatory standards and performance targets, as well as to plan, design and execute water and wastewater infrastructure projects to meet established success criteria.

Job Responsibilities:

  1. Analyze, monitor, and optimize existing water and wastewater treatment processes (e.g., sedimentation, filtration, disinfection, sludge handling).
  2. Implement process changes to improve efficiency, reduce costs, and enhance environmental compliance.
  3. Provide process engineering input into the design of new or upgraded treatment plants, pipelines, pumping stations, and chemical dosing systems.
  4. Assist with feasibility studies, process modeling, and engineering calculations.
  5. Monitor plant performance using SCADA and lab data.
  6. Prepare technical reports, trend analyses, and recommendations for improvements.
  7. Assist in ensuring compliance with environmental and public health regulations (e.g., WHO standards, local water authority guidelines).
  8. Diagnose operational issues in treatment processes and recommend corrective actions.
  9. Provide technical support to plant operators, maintenance teams, and project managers.
  10. Support or lead capital and operational projects, including commissioning, testing, and validation of process systems.
  11. Collaborate with consultants, contractors, and internal teams on project delivery.
  12. Develop and deliver technical training for operations personnel.
  13. Maintain up-to-date process documentation, SOPs, and O&M manuals.
  14. Support the Programme Manager in Managing and supervising consultants/contractors and advise on engineering issues
  15. Support the Programme Manager in Managing and supervising work to comply with all regulations, standards and applicable laws.
  16. Review designs to make sure that design requirements are met.
  17. Prepare budgets and other project resources.
  18. Prepare progress reports produced by consultant/ contractors and make recommendations for corrective action where necessary.
  19. Produce monthly progress reports on each project assigned.
  20. Support the Programme Manager in Certifying completion of works/services.
  21. Assist in reviewing requests for payments for each project.
  22. Participate in Stakeholder Engagement.
  23. Ensure compliance with relevant Regulations for projects such as Town and Country, EMA, CEC, EIA etc.
  24. Together with such other tasks as required by the Departmental Manager and which are appropriate up to the grading level of the post.

Skills, Knowledge and Abilities

  • Proficiency in the use of Microsoft Office.

Job Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Chemical Engineering, Process Engineering, or related field
  • Four (4) years in a similar process or plant engineering role, preferably in water and wastewater treatment.
  • Preferred additional requirements
    • Certification in water/wastewater treatment operations
    • Familiarity with water/wastewater treatment technologies (e.g., activated sludge, reverse osmosis, UV disinfection)
    • Experience with treatment plant operations, SCADA systems, and regulatory compliance is preferred.
    • Familiarity with the use of all FIDIC Standard Form Contracts
    • Experience in supervision of Design Consultants and Works Contractors
    • Experience in preparing Tender Documents with related specification.
    • Experience in supporting the management of complex projects.
