Job Summary
As a Prep Chef, you will play a crucial role in supporting the kitchen team by preparing
ingredients and assisting in the efficient operation of the kitchen. Your responsibilities include
chopping vegetables, portioning ingredients, preparing sauces, and ensuring that
workstations are clean and organized. You will follow recipes and kitchen instructions to
ensure consistency and quality in all dishes. The Prep Chef works closely with line cooks,
baristas and executive chefs to ensure meals are prepared in a timely manner, contributing to
a smooth kitchen workflow. A focus on food safety, efficiency, and collaboration is essential in
this role.
Key Responsibilities
• Follow all food and kitchen safety protocols.
• Follow the prep list created by chefs and baristas.
• Label, stock and organize all ingredients so that they are easily accessible.
• Measure ingredients and seasonings to be used in cooking.
• Prepare cooking ingredients by washing and chopping vegetables, cutting, seasoning and
portioning meat, and other meal prep activities as outlined by team lead.
• Measure and package ingredients for smoothies and shakes.
• Set up workstations and ingredients so that food can be prepared according to recipes.
• Undertake basic cooking duties, such making sauces, soups and dressings. Prepare simple dishes,
such as salads and entrees.
• Assist with the preparation of dishes for customers as the need arises.
• Ensure work station is kept clean and tidy and assist in the overall maintenance of the kitchen.
• Ensure that all food and other items are stored properly.
• Comply with nutrition and sanitation guidelines.
• Perform other kitchen duties as assigned by supervisor/team lead.
Job Requirements
1. Experience: Prior kitchen or food preparation experience is often preferred but not always required,
depending on the establishment.
2. Education: A high school diploma or equivalent is usually expected. Culinary school training or
certifications can be a plus.
3. Knife Skills: Ability to safely and efficiently handle knives and basic kitchen equipment for food
prep tasks like chopping, slicing, and dicing.
4. Food Safety Knowledge: Understanding of proper food handling, sanitation, and hygiene
practices. Some jobs may require food handler certification.
5. Attention to Detail: Precision in following recipes, portion sizes, and kitchen instructions.
6. Time Management: Ability to work efficiently and keep up with the pace of a busy kitchen.
7. Teamwork: Strong communication and collaboration with chefs, kitchen staff, and servers.
8. Physical Stamina: Ability to stand for long periods, lift heavy items (often 25-50 lbs), and work in
hot, fast-paced environments.
9. Adaptability: Flexibility to handle various kitchen tasks, follow instructions, and adjust to the needs
of the kitchen.
10. Basic Culinary Skills: Knowledge of ingredients, cooking techniques, and kitchen procedures.
11. Must have an up to date Food Handler's Permit.
