Applicants are invited to fill the following vacant position at St. Jude Hospital:

PHYSIOTHERAPIST

Qualifications and Experience

Applicants must have:

  • Degree in Physical Therapy from a recognized tertiary institution.
  • Registered with the Allied Health Council and licensed to practice in St. Lucia
  • Minimum of two (2) years of experience in a clinical setting, preferably in a hospital.
  • Certification in CPR and Basic Life Support (BLS).
  • Strong understanding of physical therapy principles, techniques, and modalities.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.

Key Responsibilities

Patient Assessment:

  • Conduct comprehensive initial evaluations to determine patients' physical conditions, impairments, and functional limitations.
  • Use standardized tests and measures to gather objective data on strength, range of motion, balance, coordination, and functional abilities.
  • Review patients' medical histories, physician referrals, and diagnostic tests to understand underlying conditions and contributing factors.
  • Communicate findings to patients and their families, explaining the nature of the impairments and the proposed treatment plan.

eatment Planning and implementation:

  • Develop detailed, individualized treatment plans that address specific patient needs and goals.
  • Implement therapeutic interventions, including exercises, manual therapy, modalities (e.g., ultrasound, electrical stimulation), and patient education.
  • Adjust treatment plans based on patient progress, feedback, and changes in condition.
  • Educate patients on the proper use of assistive devices (e.g., crutches, walkers, braces) and ensure they are used safely and effectively.

Patient Education:

  • Provide patients and their families with clear instructions on home exercise programs and self-management techniques.
  • Educate patients about the importance of compliance with the treatment plan to achieve optimal outcomes.
  • Offer guidance on lifestyle modifications to prevent re-injury and promote overall health and well-being.
  • Address any questions or concerns patients or their families may have about their condition or treatment.

 

Documentation:

  • Maintain accurate and detailed patient records, including initial evaluations, treatment plans, progress notes, and discharge summaries.
  • Ensure documentation complies with hospital policies, professional standards, and regulatory requirements.
  • Record patient progress, noting any significant changes in condition or response to treatment.

Collaboration:

  • Work closely with physicians, nurses, occupational therapists, and other healthcare professionals to develop and implement comprehensive care plans.
  • Participate in interdisciplinary team meetings, case conferences, and rounds to discuss patient progress and coordinate care.
  • Communicate effectively with team members to ensure continuity of care and avoid duplication of services.

Patient Advocacy:

  • Advocate for patients' needs and ensure they receive appropriate and timely interventions.
  • Assist patients in navigating the healthcare system, including accessing necessary resources and support services.
  • Support patients in setting realistic and achievable goals for their rehabilitation.
  • Promote patients' rights and ensure they are treated with dignity and respect throughout their care.

Quality Improvements:

  • Participate in quality improvement initiatives to enhance the effectiveness and efficiency of physical therapy services.
  • Stay informed about advancements in physical therapy techniques, technologies, and best practices through continuing education and professional development.
  • Contribute to research and evidence-based practice initiatives within the department.
  • Provide feedback on departmental policies, procedures, and protocols to support continuous improvement.

  • Clinical Skills: Proficient in evaluating and treating a wide range of physical impairments and disabilities.
  • Communication: Excellent verbal and written communication skills for interacting with patients, families, and the healthcare team.

  • Teamwork: Ability to work collaboratively with other healthcare professionals.

  • Education and Training: Ability to educate patients, families, and other healthcare providers.
  • Physical Stamina: Capable of performing physical tasks, including lifting, supporting, and assisting patients.
  • Technical Proficiency: Knowledgeable about physical therapy equipment and technology.

Salary will be paid in accordance with the experience and requirements for the post. with the terms stipulated by The Board of St. Jude Hospital.
