Museum Technician – G06

In accordance with paragraph f. of Article 44 of the General Standards, the official languages of the Organization are English, French, Portuguese, and Spanish.  No candidate for a position in the General Secretariat subject to the competition requirement shall be contracted until he/she has passed language proficiency exams administered by the DHR in at least two of the official languages. Nevertheless, i) Any candidate, including staff member whose native language is one of those four languages shall only be required to demonstrate proficiency on an exam in one of the others; and (ii) Persons applying for G-1 and G-2 positions at Headquarters and G-3 driver/clerk positions in those Offices of the General Secretariat in the Member States where the language requirement unduly restricts the recruitment of otherwise qualified staff shall be exempt from this language proficiency requirement for as long as they occupy those positions. Subsequently, in order to be eligible to compete for a higher-level position, any staff member who has benefited from this exemption must demonstrate proficiency in a second official language of the Organization. (iii) A person selected as the best candidate may receive a fixed-term contract, which will be considered to have lapsed in case the person does not pass the required language examination within the 36 months following the appointment.
                    
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

This is a highly skilled, semi-professional work in administrative, technical and program functions. The Museum Technician, under the direct supervision of the Director of the Art Museum of the Americas is responsible for duties which include the following:

•    Within delegated authority, the incumbent is responsible for comprehensive art handling across the museum galleries, including the Marcus Garvey Gallery, Sculpture Garden, and TL Gallery. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the execution of full exhibition installations and the deinstallation, packing, and storage of previous exhibitions. Duties also involve preparing gallery spaces by painting and readying walls; receiving and shipping external loans; and locating artworks from storage, offices, and flat files for upcoming exhibitions. The role includes framing, transporting, and installing artworks in accordance with curatorial layouts, as well as preparing, printing, cutting, and installing labels, wall texts, and images using Adobe Creative Suite tools.
•    Serves as the primary photographer for the permanent collection, gallery exhibitions, museum events, and other institutional needs, utilizing studio-grade digital full-frame and medium-format equipment. Responsibilities include photographing individual artworks for publications, catalogues, archival records, and institutional use, as well as providing photography services for the Office of the Assistant Secretary General when needed. 
•    Provides print production and mounting services in support of internal and external stakeholders. Responsibilities include preparing digital files, producing large-format prints using the museum’s 44-inch printer, and cutting, mounting, and framing printed materials. These services support embassies, missions, artists, and various OAS offices.
•    Under the supervision of the Museum Director, the role is responsible for collection tracking and documentation. This includes physically locating artworks within the collection; documenting and updating their locations in the Vernon Art Registry system; accurately recording all artwork movements and changes; and preparing deeds of gift and new acquisition documentation. The role also performs all art movements related to the permanent collection, including interoffice loan programs and internal exhibitions. On occasion, transports artworks from the permanent collection within OAS buildings and to local venues.
•    In coordination with the Museum Director, co-curates photography exhibitions at the TL Gallery. Responsibilities include conducting portfolio reviews; engaging with artists; selecting exhibition themes; printing and installing exhibition materials; documenting exhibitions for archival and social media purposes; coordinating exhibition openings (including virtual artist participation); and leading public and special-request gallery tours.
•    Supports the organization of museum events and serves as backup for museum tours and as an OAS photographer, as needed.
•    Actively engage the Performance Evaluation System: Establishing work expectations with the direct supervisor by defining individual annual objectives, participating in ongoing performance conversations, and making sure to have a formal performance evaluation meeting.
•    Perform other related duties as assigned, including replacing and backstopping for others.

QUALIFICATIONS:

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE:  
Essential: High school or technical/commercial training and seven years of relevant experience in similar positions OR advanced training and five years of relevant experience.

Desirable: Experience in the OAS or knowledge of its rules, regulations, and administrative procedures/practices as related to the area of work. Training in art installation, including training in the use of standard office software.


LANGUAGES:
Essential: Proficient in at least two of the official languages of the OAS (read, write and communicate). Language Proficiency Examination will be required.
Desirable: Working knowledge of other two OAS official languages.

COMPUTER SKILLS: Ability to effectively work using Microsoft Office (e.g. Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook) and software applicable to the area of work.
 
PERSONAL COMPETENCIES:  Client Orientation, Knowledge Sharing, Teamwork, Interpersonal Skills.  Ability to clearly communicate in the languages required for the post.
