Manager – Credit Risk supports credit quality assessment across loans/portfolios, monitors policy compliance, evaluates risk exposure, and supports leadership with reporting, training, and cross-business collaboration.

Manager-Credit Risk

Functional Assignment:

This role is responsible for supporting the Credit Risk function through the assessment, on a loan specific or portfolio-wide basis, of credit quality and corresponding potential loan or other loss exposure for the various loan portfolios and activities which create credit risk. Monitor compliance with, and adequacy of, established business line and corporate policies. The Manager will provide general support to the Chief Risk Officer and Senior Manager Credit Risk and as required, liaise with various business lines to assess the quality of portfolios, provide best practice coaching and training, where required. 

Key Accountabilities:

  • Works closely with the Chief Risk Officer to develop and accomplish goals and strategic plans established by the Board of Directors and company executives.
  • Assists with the preparation, maintenance and implementation of the Bank`s Risk Management Framework.
  • Ensures that internal policies and practices reflect the bank’s risk appetite and that any changes in law or regulations are considered and applied; recommends periodic changes to policies and procedures when necessary to minimize the Company’s risk.
  • Maintains a high level of working knowledge of banking laws and regulations; reads and interprets various publications and circulars keeping abreast of local, regional and international market trends;
  • Perform risk assessments and review the assessments on the credit proposals submitted by business units; exercise credit judgment; and make sound credit recommendations and/or decisions to the Chief Risk Officer or delegate
  • Ensures all internal credit policies and procedures are adhered to and develop or enhance such policies and procedures to ensure they reflect current best practices and regulatory requirements.
  • Assists in the meeting of asset quality targets for the lending portfolio via ensuring adherence to Bank credit risk policy, guidelines & procedures.
  • Identifies and elevates to the Chief Risk Officer any situations of non-compliance with lending authorities, credit risk policy, guidelines and procedures or any other perceived lending improprieties.
  • As required, liaises with business units and provides support and guidance on proposals and any credit-related matters.
  • Supports delinquency management - facilitates the remediation, downgrade and closure of deficiencies relating to credit policy and procedures and dealing with policy and procedural systems.
  • Provide support and guidance to the Bank’s Retail and Commercial Bank Department Arrears Committee.
  • Performs periodic audits on Credit applications approved by various business units under respective designated limits of authority (DLA) to ensure conformity to policies and procedures.
  • Prepare various risk-related reports to Chief Risk Officer or senior leadership as required.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Education & Experience

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Business Management or related field. Post-graduate qualifications or professional certification (e.g. CRA, FRM) would be considered an asset and is preferred.
  • Significant generalist broad based Risk knowledge particularly Credit Risk, Underwriting and Deal Structuring.
  • Knowledge of management of remedial loans will be an advantage
  • Minimum seven (7) years’ progressive experience in banking environment preferably within a credit or risk-based function.

  • Strong understanding of credit risk principles and financial analysis techniques.
  • Excellent communication and presentation skills.
  • Ability to disseminate information and effectively communicate guidelines to employees and check for understanding.
  • Ability to work independently and collaborate effectively as a team member
  • Exhibit high degree of professionalism and confidentiality in handling and having access to sensitive information.
  • Accuracy and attention to detail.
  • Ability to interpret complex financial data and make informed decisions.
