LABORATORY TECHNICIAN/INSTRUCTOR
The Caribbean Maritime University (CMU), the only specialized maritime university in the English-speaking Caribbean is
inviting applications for Laboratory Technician/Instructor (Level 4).
SUMMARY
The Laboratory Technician/Instructor provides academic support to the Faculty/Centre/Department by ensuring the safe, reliable, and effective operation of Faculty of Engineering and Applied Technology laboratories by maintaining, servicing, and supporting engineering laboratory equipment, while providing technical assistance for teaching, learning, research, and compliance with safety, quality assurance, and accreditation requirements. The technician reports to the HOD.
KEY OUTPUTS:
- FEAT laboratory equipment maintained in safe, operational, and audit-ready condition at all times.
- Up-to-date maintenance logs, calibration records, and asset registers available for inspections and accreditation.
- Timely identification and resolution of equipment faults with minimal disruption to teaching and laboratory schedules.
- Laboratories compliant with health, safety, and environmental standards and University policies.
- Effective technical support provided to staff and students during laboratory sessions and practical activities.
KEY RESPONSIBILITY AREAS:
- Maintain, service, calibrate, and troubleshoot FEAT laboratory equipment to ensure reliability, safety, and readiness for teaching and research.
- Apply appropriate engineering standards, safety codes, and manufacturer specifications in all technical activities.
- Ensure accurate technical documentation, including maintenance schedules, calibration records, and equipment service histories.
- Provide professional technical support and guidance to academic staff and students during laboratory operations.
- Uphold professional ethics, confidentiality, and continuous improvement through ongoing skills development and adherence to University policies.
PERFORMANCE STANDARDS
- Laboratory equipment is maintained in safe, functional condition with minimal downtime and no preventable safety incidents.
- Preventive maintenance and calibration activities are completed according to approved schedules and documented accurately.
- Maintenance records, asset registers, and technical documentation are complete, current, and audit-ready at all times.
- Technical support is provided promptly and professionally to staff and students, ensuring uninterrupted laboratory delivery.
- All duties are performed in compliance with ISO 9001:2015, health and safety regulations, and University policies.
REQUIRED COMPETENCIES
Technical
- Strong knowledge of engineering laboratory equipment, including HVAC systems, electrical machines, automation/PLC systems, mechanical rigs, and energy systems.
- Ability to diagnose faults, perform preventive maintenance, and apply calibration and testing procedures.
- Competence in interpreting technical drawings, manuals, schematics, and safety documentation.

MINIMUM REQUIRED QUALIFICATION AND EXPERIENCE
- Bachelor’s Degree in a relevant technical or educational field
- At least two (2) years working experience in a similar position.
