Laboratory Manager

Job Description: Laboratory Manager

Primary Location: Freeport.

Working Hours: Monday–Friday, 7:30 am.–4:30 pm. Work outside these hours, weekends, and/or holidays may be required. Overtime is not allocated for this position.

Job Purpose

Manage and coordinate ASD laboratory operations, resources, and expansion initiatives while meeting customer expectations. Lead continuous optimization of laboratory efficiency and uphold standards required by the ISO/IEC 17025:2017 Accreditation Standard.

Key Responsibilities

  • Laboratory development, optimization, continuous improvement, and expansion.
  • Personnel development, mentorship, and performance management.
  • Maintain ISO/IEC 17025:2017-compliant standards, protocols, and documentation.
  • Manage Analytical Division projects/initiatives as delegated by the Division Manager (it).
  • Supervise ASD operations to meet quality and timeline objectives.
  • Ensure staff competency, adequate training, and safe, quality-oriented practices.
  • Implement preventive maintenance programs for major equipment.
  • Support development of new analytical methods and applications.
  • Enforce company safety and quality policies; ensure required training.
  • Provide timely operational and technical updates to the Division Manager (it) and senior leadership.
  • Ensure all services are delivered ethically and prudently.
  • Develop systems, methods, procedures, and programs to meet operational and commercial objectives.
  • Prepare staff evaluations and performance reviews.
Essential/Primary Functions

  • Ensure timely and proper sample receipt, handling, analysis, and disposal.
  • Ensure accurate and complete documentation (logbooks, forms, etc.).
  • Oversee housekeeping and roster responsibilities.
  • Ensure timely, accurate execution of contractual and one-off field work per customer scope.
  • Maintain environmental conditions in lab areas as required by the Accreditation Standard; train staff accordingly.
  • Oversee proper use, care, troubleshooting, and maintenance of lab equipment; develop and deliver related training.
  • Develop and execute preventive maintenance programs for all lab equipment.
  • Lead R&D for new services/methods and improvements to current test procedures.
  • Propose initiatives for strategic and competitive advantage.
  • Manage analytical equipment for customers with sensitive turnaround times (e.g., WSD) and maintain communication.
  • Coordinate daily testing schedules to meet quality and timeline goals.
  • Plan analytical workload with the Division Manager (it) and communicate to staff for efficiency.
  • Implement training to assure competency for analytical and field sampling tasks; develop training modules and assessments.
  • Ensure all QC requirements per SOPs, test methods, and Accreditation Standard are executed.
  • Ensure LIMS (e.g., KLAMS/LIMS or equivalent) is updated accurately and promptly.
  • Ensure QMS requirements per SOPs, test methods, and Accreditation Standard are executed in all operations.
  • Verify analytical work before submission to the reporting team.
  • Manage inventories for chemicals, consumables, glassware, and equipment.
  • Monitor and control staff punctuality and man-hours.
  • Ensure Quality Incident, HSE, and IPAR reporting is thorough and timely.
  • Issue staff performance reviews and apply disciplinary measures (with Division Manager (it)) when needed.
  • Develop training goals and programs for laboratory staff.
  • Provide weekly reports to the Division Manager (it).
  • Support marketing and business development (customer meetings, events, brochures, social media, flyers, newsletters).
  • Delegate and execute corrective and preventive actions with the Quality team and Division Manager (it).
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.
  • Maintain confidentiality of company business, customers, and personnel.

  • Monitor quality performance, provide feedback, and implement improvement plans.
  • Resolve quality issues and escalate significant matters to Top Management.
  • Facilitate cross-divisional communication to unify quality management efforts.
  • Report quality incidents promptly; participate in investigations and root cause analysis.
  • Contribute to company quality objectives.
  • Identify training needs and allocate resources for effective quality programs.
  • Participate in internal/external quality audits.
  • Engage in quality training and related activities.
  • Develop and implement quality KPIs in areas of responsibility.
  • Assign and ensure participation in quality responsibilities across the team.
  • Maintain quality records within the Division/Department.
  • Assist in closing quality action items.
  • Report quality performance regularly to Top Management and stakeholders.
  • Identify and lead process improvement opportunities to enhance quality.
Safety Responsibilities and Accountabilities (HSE)

  • Ensure HSE policies are effective and relevant to the company and industry.
  • Regularly appraise policy effectiveness, implement changes, and communicate updates to employees, clients, contractors, etc.
  • Understand and implement the HSE program in alignment with company policies.
  • Develop HSE objectives with HSE personnel.
  • Maintain constant awareness of HSE performance; promote systems supporting HSE goals and targets.
  • Clearly assign HSE responsibilities and ensure staff understanding.
  • Protect employees’ rights to raise HSE concerns without fear of victimization.
  • Allocate adequate resources for effective HSE program implementation.
  • Ensure effective emergency procedures are established and followed.
  • Conduct scheduled HSE inspections/audits with HSE personnel and Leadership.
  • Encourage and model appropriate safety behaviors.
  • Approve relevant training for employees.
  • Ensure effective hazard identification, documented management, and mitigation implementation.
  • Review and sign documentation for HSE incidents.
  • Conduct monthly HSE meetings or safety briefings with employees.
  • Ensure corrective actions are documented, tracked, and closed out promptly, and updates are communicated to the HSEQT department.
  • Undergo training and conform to HSE procedures.
Job Specifications

Education, Skills, and Training

  • University degree in Natural Sciences or equivalent.
  • Project/Operations Management training.
  • Core Competencies:

Experience and Other Requirements

  • Minimum of four (4) years’ experience in a similar environment.
  • Valid Driver’s Permit.
