Job description:
Job Title: Field Engineer
Primary objective of the job:
This Field Engineer is primarily responsible for the operation and maintenance of all RBS, Transmission, IP and FTTx equipment and the monitoring of all related environmental factors throughout Digicel’s network, to ensure 100% availability of all Fiber, Transport and Radio Base Stations. The escalation of all anomalies to relevant departments, the compilation of all Field and RBS related reports on a weekly basis, the scheduling of standby and training rosters throughout the year and the coordination of all site related work and projects also falls within the ambit of this job.
Main Duties and Responsibilities:
Maintenance of microwave equipment:
- Tests and commissions microwave links
- Monitors output power, receive levels, BER, input voltages of PDH & SDH Radios.
- Monitors Transmission nodes on the Network
- Alarm monitoring, analysis and correction
- Replacement of PDH radios
- Troubleshoots faults and replaces faulty modules and
- Coordinates and performs routine procedures to maintain stability of Digicel Network
Maintenance of RBS equipment:
- Monitors operation of RBS
- Troubleshoots faults and replace faulty modules
- Configures and wires external alarms and voltage charging circuits
- Assist in the integration of new sites
- Monitors the operation of air-conditioning and/or heat exchanger units (effecting repairs sometimes)
- Maintains inventory of RBS, Transport and Fiber equipment related to the RBS nodes
- Verify the appropriate function of equipment according to specification.
Maintenance of IP Equipment:
- Monitor the operation of IP related equipment deployed on the Field
- Update and prepare RAN documentation, routing details and other installed base records
- Configuration and troubleshooting of IP routing protocols such as OSPF, ISIS, MPLS & BGP including Internet Peering and Traffic engineering. This includes complete configuration of switches, routers, multiplexors, radios, cross connects and other associated gear required in the transmission network
- Investigate, troubleshoot and restore service for any IP RAN related outage or fault. Aid in root cause analyses and follow up activities
- Review the network to optimize performance, including Bit Error Rate [BER] and other quality related analyses. Produce reports on network health and key performance indicators
- Ensure timely delivery and integration of alarms and other performance events (SNMP traps etc.) from transmission network nodes to centralized Network Management System (NMS)
- Implement upgrades of IP RAN transport system as required
- Verify the appropriate function of equipment according to specification
- Evaluate IP RAN equipment for system specification and network design compatibility
- Coordinates and performs routine procedures to maintain stability.
Maintenance of FTTx Equipment:
- Monitor the operation of the FTTx equipment
- Investigate, troubleshoot and restore service for any FTTx related outage or fault. Aid in root cause analyses and follow up activities
- Assist in the implementation of upgrades as required
- Implement upgrades on the DWDM transmission system as required
- Review the network to optimize performance, including transmit and receive power levels, Forward Error Correction (FEC) and other quality related analyses. Produce reports on network health and key performance indicators
- Coordinates and performs routine procedures to maintain stability.
Academic Qualifications and Experience Required:
- A First Degree/Diploma in telecommunications/electronics or equivalent
- Strong TCP/IP background and networking skills
- Strong Fiber engineering background
- Three (3) years’ experience in the maintenance of telecommunications network
- An acceptable combination of experience and academic qualifications would be considered in lieu of minimum requirements.

- Possess an adaptive style in being able to communicate often technical ideas in simple terms
- Possess strong organizational skills, being able to manage multiple projects at once
- Willing to work under pressure, in a fast paced and challenging environment.
