The Facilities Technician will be an integral part of the Maintenance Team and will be responsible for assisting the Maintenance Co-ordinator in keeping the facility operating and repairing any problems when they are discovered before they have a chance to worsen. He/She will usually be required to perform a wide range of repair tasks around the facility and be should be skilled in a variety of areas including plumbing, carpentry, and electrical systems.

Distinguishing Characteristics

The incumbent performs the full range of duties as assigned, and must be flexible while working independently, exercise initiative and sound judgement.

Important and Essential duties:

• Performs routine maintenance around the building such as fixing structural damage, for example, window, door or wall repair.
• Performs general repairs that do not require a specialized technician. Examples may include repairing drywall, painting, and repairing doors and other building fixtures.
• Repairing broken or leaking plumbing to avoid water damage and restore full use of water fixtures
• Inspects and identifies equipment or machines in need of repair.
• Accurately maintains a log of faults/repairs and submits to the Maintenance Co-ordinator.
• Troubleshoots issues to determine necessary repairs.
• Plans repair work using buildings blueprints as needed.
• Cleans and assists with upkeep of the facilities.
• Orders supplies and materials needed for repairs and maintenance.
• Applies preventative measures to the building to reduce the risk of future problems, such as using a sealant on a roof.
• Fixes potential safety hazards to avoid injuries.
• Performs other related duties as assigned.

Job Related and Essential Qualifications:

Knowledge of:

• General maintenance methods
• Knowledge of general carpentry, masonry, plumbing, painting and repair
• Drills and various hand and power tools
• OSH Practices

Ability to:

• Work independently as well as in a team environment.
• Function well in a high-pressure environment.
• Identify and solve problems in a timely manner
• Drive and operate different lifting machinery.
• Be reliable, diligent and dedicated
• Physically capable, available and willing to work long hours including weekends, public holidays, and evenings.
• Pay attention to detail and accuracy.
• Be professional at all times.

Qualifications and Experience

• Minimum of five (5) CXC passes inclusive of English and Mathematics.
• Three (3) to Five (5) years’ work experience in a similar position.

Preferred Skills

• Ability to follow instructions from supervisors or senior maintenance workers.
• Excellent organizational and time management skills.

Physical Requirements:

• Prolonged periods standing and walking.
• Must be physically able to climb ladders, bend, or crawl into awkward spaces.
• Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds at a time.
