Job description:

As the Senior Database Administrator (DBA), you will be responsible for supervising the day to day administration of both the Microsoft SQL and Oracle database estates, and to maintain a 99.99% uptime availability; support applications and data warehouse teams to deliver projects in a timely manner, and provide the best services including monitoring, patching and other planned activities including azure cloud migrations assistance as required.

To be successful at this role, you must be capable of managing very large databases with expert knowledge of data life cycle management; additionally, you will have experience in managing patching and version control across the entire database estates; also, you must be capable of providing guidance on database design, implementation strategies, as well as provide appropriate and timely communications to all stakeholders.  In addition, the Senior Database Administrator is the internal subject matter expert on all things Database with at deep knowledge on design, deployment, support and maintenance solutions involving enterprise databases and including clusters and high availability solutions.

 

Main Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Provide Installation, configuration and upgrading of Microsoft SQL and Oracle server software and related products and tools.
  • Support the database needs in accordance with best practices and in keeping with internal database management policies and procedures and guidelines.
  • Implement and maintain database security by managing the users, roles and privileges.
  • Setup and maintain documentation and standards
  • Perform general technical troubleshooting and give consultation to development teams
  • Engage both Microsoft and Oracle for escalated vendor technical support as required.
  • Manage database Patch Management and Version Control
  • Establish specific monitoring alerts based on performance metrics thresholds as well as general alerts based on applications requirements and best practices.
  • Examine alert/error logs to manage and remediate alert conditions.
  • Monitor query plan changes and recommend optimization opportunities.
  • Liaise with applications manager(s) to coordinate routine patching needs, including ensuring that rollbacks are completed should the patch not complete successfully.
  • Achieve and established key performance indicators (KPI) metrics weekly and monthly
  • Take corrective actions to remediate issues identified by application managers.
  • Ability to manage database backups and restores as part of business continuity requirements.
  • Work as part of a team and provide 7x24 support when required

 

Academic qualifications and experience required for job:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science or related field
  • Five years’ experience in database administration
  • Advanced Level Experience with SQL Server Extended Events is highly is required
  • Advanced Level Experience with SQL Server Management Studio (SSMS) XEvent Profiler is required
  • Advanced Level Experience with Oracle’s Automatic Database Diagnostics Monitor (ADDM) is required
  • Advanced Level Experience with Oracle’s Enterprise Manager is required
  • Oracle Certified Professional or Oracle RAC Administrator is highly desirable
  • Microsoft SQL Certification is required.
  • Proficiency in Oracle 12c and above at a minimum.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft SQL 2016 is required.
  • Ability to make fast and logical decisions
  • Able to conduct research into issues and products as required
  • Ability to prioritize and execute tasks in a high-pressure environment
  • Ability to present ideas in both technical and user-friendly language
  • Proficiency in Office 365 products including Microsoft Teams is highly desirable
