Job description:

Job Title: IP/MPLS Engineer  

 

 Primary objective of the job:

  

The IP/MPLS Engineer is responsible for providing effective and efficient technical support for all Core nodes, implementing and related testing of new software and hardware, and conducting fit-for-purpose analysis of trends to plan and implement expansion(s) within the Digicel network. Additionally, the person will be responsible for supporting other sections, where needed, to facilitate expansions and fault resolution within acceptable timeframes.

 

Main Duties and Responsibilities:

 

  1. Customer Focus: Continuously seeks and capitalizes on opportunities to exceed the expectations of customers (internal and external) by placing a keen interest on understanding and effectively resolving customer-impacting issues in a professional and result-oriented manner. Takes ownership of all customer issues till resolved.
  2. Network Design: Design the Packet Core Network which includes the Mobile Data Network and the MPBN IP Network to support Mobile data services (eg. Customer Internet, Corporate APNs, VPN Solutions) and Network connectivity from Core Network elements (eg. MSC, HLR, SGSN, GGSN) to the wider IP network. Engineer should also be able to design packet inspection and classification systems and policies to support specific data plans and promotions.
  3. Node Configuration: Perform configuration of Packet Core nodes (eg. SGSN, GGSN, DNS, Radius) for customer internet, IP Network nodes (Eg. Routers, switches and Firewalls) for OSPF, BGP, MPLS and Deep Packet Inspection Solutions (eg. Sandvine) for data plans.
  4. Operation and Maintenance: This Packet Core Engineer has the knowledge and expertise to develop systems and procedures geared towards the maintenance of the MPBN and Mobile Data Network to ensure it is functioning as per design and the availability of the network with minimum downtime.
  5. Network Troubleshooting: Investigate, troubleshoot and restore any customer service outages for data and any IP Network Connectivity for the Core Network. Performed detailed analysis to determine root cause and follow up activities.
  6. Network Analysis and KPIs: Preparation and analysis of KPI reports reflecting the state of the network to the business and other stakeholders. Performs monthly capacity planning and reviews Packet Core network design based on these to suggest optimization methods.
  7. SLAs: Work with and support Technology Operations to ensure all SLA targets are met or exceeded.
  8. Quality of Service: Develop Quality of Service design and configuration for all services across the Packet Core Network to ensure that low latency services and critical traffic receives the appropriate bandwidth.
  9. Network Processes: Develop and implement the Availability, Capacity and Continuity Processes for the MPBN and Packet Core Network and all relates services.
  10. System Records: Create documentation for high level design and low level design and any installed base records. Create configuration management system, training manuals and troubleshooting processes for all node configurations.
  11. System Monitoring:  Create and monitor Core Data/IP dashboards which clearly define service performance trends and functional performance of the MPBN and Packet Core network. Monitor this dashboard as part of operational routines for detection of issues and capacity planning.

 

Academic Qualifications and Experience Required:

 

  • BSc. Degree in Electrical/Communications Engineering or Computer engineering/software engineering.
  • A minimum of 3-5 years of experience in a similar environment.
  • Knowledge of IP Networks, OSPF, BGP, MPLS
  • Programming Experience
  • Training or mentoring experience would be an asset.
  • Cisco Certified Network Professional (CCNA)
  • An acceptable combination of academic qualifications and work experience may be considered in lieu of minimum requirements.

  • Experience configuring and troubleshooting multiple types of network media
  • Knowledge and Experience of IP address subnetting, address management & IP architecture.
  • Experience with Network Management systems such as Solarwinds or Cacti
