Internal Liaison: Senior Medical Staff, Nursing Staff, Medical Students, Pharmacy Staff, Allied Health Professionals,Administrative Staff, Laboratory and Radiology Staff.
External Liaison: Patients and Families, Primary Care Physicians, Specialty Clinics, Emergency Services, Public Health Authorities, Insurance Companies, External Laboratories and Diagnostic Centers.
Job Summary: Pediatric Department will play a vital role in providing compassionate and comprehensive medical care to pediatric patients. Working under the supervision of pediatricians and senior medical staff, the Junior House Officer will participate in the evaluation, diagnosis, and management of children with a wide range of medical conditions. This role offers valuable hands-on experience in pediatric medicine and an opportunity for professional growth in a supportive and collaborative healthcare environment.
Key Responsibilities:
Medical Assessment:
- Conduct thorough medical assessments of pediatric patients, including obtaining medical history, performing physical examinations, and interpreting diagnostic tests to establish accurate diagnoses and formulate appropriate treatment plans.
Treatment and Management:
- Assist in the management of acute and chronic pediatric illnesses, including but not limited to respiratory infections, gastrointestinal disorders, allergic reactions, and chronic diseases (e.g., asthma, diabetes).
Medication Administration:
- Administer medications to pediatric patients, ensuring accurate dosing, proper administration routes, and adherence to safety protocols.
- Monitor patients for adverse drug reactions and side effects, reporting findings to senior medical staff as necessary.
Procedural Skills:
- Develop proficiency in basic pediatric procedural skills, such as venipuncture, intravenous (IV) line placement, urinary catheterization, and nasogastric tube insertion, under the guidance and supervision of pediatricians and experienced healthcare providers. This Involves:
- Venipuncture: Obtain blood samples for laboratory testing.
- Intravenous (IV) Line Placement: Insert peripheral IV catheters for fluid resuscitation, medicationadministration, and blood product transfusion using sterile technique and appropriate catheter sizes.
- Urinary Catheterization: Insert urinary catheters for bladder decompression, urine output monitoring, oradministration of contrast agents for imaging studies, following aseptic techniques, and assessing for urinaryretention or obstruction.
- Wound Management: Assess and clean wounds, lacerations, or abrasions using sterile techniques, applyappropriate wound dressings or closures, and administer local anesthesia or analgesia as needed for woundcare procedures.
- Splinting and Immobilization: Provide temporary splinting or immobilization of extremity injuries (e.g.,fractures, dislocations) using commercial splints, improvised devices, or orthopedic wraps to stabilizeinjuries and reduce pain.
- Nasogastric (NG) Tube Insertion: Insert nasogastric tubes for gastric decompression, enteral feeding, ormedication administration in pediatric patients.
Patient Monitoring:
- Monitor pediatric patients' vital signs, clinical status, and response to treatment, recognizing and promptly addressing changes or deterioration in condition. Provide ongoing reassessment and care adjustments as needed.
Patient Education and Family Communication:
- Communicate effectively with pediatric patients and their families, explaining medical conditions, treatment plans, and procedures in clear and age-appropriate language.
- Address families' questions, concerns, and emotional needs with empathy and compassion.
Documentation:
- Document patient encounters, assessments, interventions, and treatment plans accurately and comprehensively in electronic health records (EHR) or medical charts, adhering to documentation standards and regulatory requirements.
- Ensure all documentation in the inpatient Medical Chart is complete within 24hrs of discharge.
- Prepare death certificates with 48 hours, where postmortem results are not required.
- Complete requests for Medical Reports within 72hrs.
- Complete and submit incident reports for reportable events within 24hrs of occurrence.
Collaboration:
- Collaborate effectively with interdisciplinary healthcare team members, including nurses, respiratory therapists, pharmacists, and social workers, to coordinate patient care and ensure holistic management of pediatric patients' medical, developmental, and psychosocial needs.
Professional Development:
- Participate in educational activities, conferences, and continuing medical education (CME) opportunities to enhance clinical knowledge, skills, and competency in internal medicine practice.
Qualifications:
- Medical degree (MBBS or equivalent) from a recognized medical school.
- Registered Medical Practitioner with the St. Lucia Medical & Dental Council to practice in St. Lucia.
- Successful completion of an internship from a recognized medical institution, rotating in the clinical disciplines which includes Surgery, Obstetrics and Gynecology, Internal Medicine, and Pediatrics.
- Advanced cardiac life support (ACLS) certification.
- Successful completion of CAMC part I and II or an equivalent examination.

- Pediatric Clinical Knowledge: Proficiency in pediatric medical knowledge, including normal growth and development, common pediatric illnesses, acute and chronic diseases, and developmental milestones. Understanding of pediatric pharmacology, immunizations, and preventive healthcare guidelines.
- Clinical Skills: Ability to perform thorough pediatric medical assessments, including obtaining medical history, conducting physical examinations, and interpreting diagnostic tests to establish accurate diagnoses and formulate appropriate treatment plans.

Working Conditions:
- Work Location: Hospital-based position in the Pediatric Department.
- Schedule: Full-time position
- Hours: Rotating shifts, including days, evenings, nights, weekends, and holidays, as required by departmental schedules.
- Environment: Dynamic and interactive clinical environment with exposure to pediatric patients with various medical conditions and developmental stages. Collaboration with pediatric specialists and allied health professionals.
- Equipment: Use of medical equipment and technology for pediatric patient assessment, treatment, and monitoring.
- Physical Requirements: Standing, walking, and performing clinical duties in a pediatric healthcare setting. Ability to lift and position pediatric patients as needed for examination and procedures.
Restrictions:
- In the walk-in outpatient clinics and ER settings, junior physicians who meet the relevant criteria may see patients independently, however they will have access to the Consultant Physicians from the various specialty areas to seek advice or to refer patients as is appropriate.
- For in-patients and all specialty outpatient clinics, all care administered by junior physicians is supervised by the Consultant Physician who is ultimately responsible for the care of the patient.
- A Consultant Physician will customarily see any complex or seriously ill patient. The Junior House Officer must Immediately call-out a consultant physician in complex or acute cases.
- Be available as is required when on call. Respond within 5 minutes to all emergencies. Promptly respond to calls with appropriate evaluation and action within 20 minutes.
