Group Internal Review & Controls Officer

Position Summary

The Internal Review & Controls Officer is responsible for planning, executing, and reporting on internal control reviews across the Group. The role’s core purpose is to strengthen governance, risk management, and internal controls by proactively evaluating business processes, identifying control gaps, and driving timely remediation.

By embedding a culture of accountability and risk awareness, the Officer enables senior management to achieve operational efficiency, regulatory compliance, and sustainable business practices. A natural outcome of this strengthened control environment will be fewer and less severe issues raised by third-party internal auditors.

Key Responsibilities

Audit Planning & Execution

  • Develop and maintain an annual internal review and controls plan aligned with the Group’s risk profile, business objectives, and regulatory requirements.
  • Independently plan, scope, and execute reviews of financial, operational, and compliance processes across the Group.
  • Document work programs, testing, and findings in line with professional audit standards.

Control Assessment & Remediation

  • Assess the adequacy and effectiveness of internal controls, highlighting weaknesses and recommending practical, risk-based improvements.
  • Monitor and verify implementation of corrective actions, escalating delays or unresolved issues to senior management.
  • Support continuous improvement in processes and policies to ensure controls remain effective and relevant.

Stakeholder Engagement

  • Work closely with process owners and management to strengthen control practices and ensure
    accountability.
  • Prepare for third-party internal audits by ensuring findings are addressed and processes are audit-ready.
  • Provide clear, concise reports and dashboards to senior management on review outcomes, trends, and remediation progress.

Risk & Governance Support

  • Conduct targeted reviews of high-risk areas based on risk assessments, emerging risks, or management requests.
  • Contribute to control awareness initiatives and training across the Group.
  • Stay up to date on regulatory developments and industry best practices relevant to the insurance sector to anticipate and address emerging risks.

Qualifications & Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, Risk Management, Business Administration, or related field (Master’s degree or professional certification preferred).
  • Professional certifications such as CIA, CPA, ACCA, ACA, or CISA strongly preferred.
  • 4–6 years’ progressive experience in internal audit, risk management, or internal controls, with at least 2 years in a role requiring independent planning and execution of reviews.
  • Strong knowledge of insurance operations, financial reporting, and regulatory compliance frameworks.
  • Demonstrated ability to deliver end-to-end reviews (planning, fieldwork, reporting, follow-up) with little or no supervision.
  • Experience working with third-party auditors and regulators is an advantage.

Skills & Competencies

  • Strong knowledge of audit methodology and internal control frameworks.
  • High degree of independence, initiative, and sound professional judgment.
  • Analytical thinker with strong problem-solving skills and attention to detail.
  • Excellent report-writing and presentation skills.
  • Strong interpersonal and influencing skills, with the ability to engage stakeholders across the Group.
  • Well-organized, able to manage multiple priorities and deliver results under tight deadlines.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite; familiarity with audit or risk management software is an asset.
