The Facilities Engineer is responsible for planning, implementing, and maintaining the infrastructure and equipment of buildings and facilities.
The incumbent also performs analyses of operational processes, resource allocation, energy use, and safety processes, and recommend and implement improvements.
In addition, the incumbent works in tandem with the Cloud Engineers to implement and operationalize the most optimal cloud-based solutions and complementary physical infrastructure for the company by ensuring end to end solution performance, uptime, and scale, maintaining high standards of thoughtful design and on-time deployment while managing environments in accordance with company security guidelines; troubleshoot incidents, identify root cause, fix and document problems, and implement preventive measures.
KEY FUNCTIONS
Annual Operations
- Responsible and accountable for input into the creation of a facilities operational plan by conducting an analysis of facilities operations and logs.
Data Center Capacity Management
- Jointly responsible for the determination of facility and information technology site requirements; includes Data Center site location as required for internal use or by commercial customers.
- Designing and overseeing the implementation of facility expansion, layout, various systems, and quality controls.
- Jointly responsible for all equipment movements by sign-off on same, as well as inspection of final locations.
- Gathering and analyzing data, blueprints, and reports.
- Jointly responsible for the configuration of backup interfaces and set RPO (Recovery Point Objective) and RTO (Recovery Time Objective), including testing, commissioning and implementation of a monitoring plan.
Monitoring Process
- Responsible and accountable for collection of monitoring requirements for each element of new facility devices.
- Responsible for configuration of facilities and information technology interfaces; includes a test and commission monitoring plan with SLA’s and alarm thresholds.
- Provide onsite support to internal & external customers by troubleshooting and analyzing technical problems and applying scientific methodology to their resolution.
Colocation Fulfilment (COLO)/ Cloud Fulfilment
- Responsible for receipt and review of requests as well as including reporting on current environmental statistics.
- Responsible and accountable to configure power requirements and the preparation of the rack space for implementation.
- Configure IT/network requirements, prepare patch panels, multi-media rooms (MMR), etc. for implementation.
- Jointly responsible to configure integration into customer environment; includes testing and commissioning of COLO solution.
- Identify new solutions or devices to be virtualized along with resource details for Cloud fulfillment.
- Implement, operate and maintain Data Center facilities infrastructure environment. This includes AC Power, DC Power, UPS, Generators, Air Conditioning, Fire Detection Alarm and Suppression Systems (FDASS), building management system, electronic security system, including Data Center Cloud infrastructure environment.
- Provide advice and input relating to the Data Center process, activities, security and operational controls to ensure that they are meeting the industry’s best practice standards; Performs incident and Problem management functions inclusive of Root Cause Analysis (RCAs) related to facilities infrastructure.
- Execute operational processes to ensure consistency and regulatory compliance for all Data Center IT services inclusive of Trinidad and Tobago Electricity Corporation (T&TEC), Government Electrical Inspectorate, Factory Inspectorate, Health Safety and Environment as well as any other relevant statutory bodies.
- Provide technical input into TSTT’s responses to RFPs, RFIs or any other enterprise led sales endeavors.
- Represent TSTT in various trade shows, conferences, or similar technology exchange forums.
- Implement recommendations for capacity management functions for facilities and virtual infrastructure.
- Prepare and submit maintenance work order status report and other key indicators and Unit Activities Reports.
- Performs maintenance work order inspections; inspects completed routine orders and capital projects.
- Identify, maintain, and dispose of confidential and/or personal data and information to meet the Company’s objectives related to data availability, integrity, confidentiality, and personal information privacy.
- Ensure that all work is done in accordance with established safety practices and procedures.
- Performs such other related duties as may be assigned by the manager.
EDUCATION:
- A minimum of a bachelors’ Degree in Mechanical, Electrical, Civil, Industrial or related engineering and/or science fields.
- Knowledge of: All engineering systems supporting the Data Centre e.g., electrical diagrams, system details, architectural overview, etc.
- Computer proficiency in productivity tools and applications, including but not limited to MS Office, Suite, MS Project, PowerPoint, Visio, etc.
- CDCP – TIA Certified Data Centre Professional / CDFOM TIA Certified Data Centre Facilities Operations Manager/ OSHA training or certification will be considered an asset.
EXPERIENCE/TRAINING:
- Three (3) years’ post qualification experience, preferably working within a Data Centre environment. This should be comprised of the following:
- Two (2) years’ experience in the analysis and design of Building Systems, which may include A/C, FDASS, CCTV, Access Control, Electrical, UPS, Generator, Structural, and Architectural.
- One (1) year experience in the analysis and operation of Electrical Switch gear, High Voltage Circuits inclusive of experience working with low voltage control systems.
- The following will be an asset:
- Certificate in facilities management systems inclusive of (Programmable Logic Controllers (PLC), Field level Instrumentation and SCADA (Supervisory control and data acquisition) HMI (Human Management Interface) Systems).
- Work is largely within a closely controlled Data Centre environment with exposure to high voltage equipment.

- Compliance - Good understanding of current international IT and Data Centre standards (e.g., TIA and SOC2).
- Cloud First Focus - Ability to adopt, implement and maintain a cloud first approach to the overall IT solution support, design and application development in conjunction with Technology Vendors to deliver solutions that align with current and future business requirements, both internally and helping our customers make use of secure, scalable and reliable cloud solutions at a competitive price.
- Solution Design & Implementation - The specification, design, and implementation of information systems solutions (security, applications, network, database, cloud, data centre, etc.) to meet the defined business need either internally or commercially that are in alignment with corporate strategy, industry best practice and within constraints of cost, security and sustainability. It spans the identification of concepts and their translation into an implementable design; planning, development, testing and go-live of the final product or service and ensures the optimum use of current solutions, retention of compatibility with enterprise and solution architectures and avoiding solution duplication.
