The Customs & Logistics Specialist plays a critical role in the Customs/Logistics Department, by lending support to the Customs and Logistics Teams in ensuring the efficient movement and customs clearance of shipments while maintaining compliance with customs regulations.
PRINCIPAL ACCOUNTABILITIES:
• Administratively oversee and coordinate all import and export shipment operations within the Customs/Logistics
Department to ensure accurate and timely clearances, preventing delays, rent and demurrage.
• Monitor and track import and export shipments, working closely with customs import and export teams, customs
brokers, shipping agents and freight forwarders, and warehouse teams to ensure seamless cargo movement.
• Ensure full customs compliance by preparing and validating all required shipping documents, avoiding penalties,
inclusive of but not limited to ASYCUDA, ACE, NAVIS and Container Control platforms.
• Close communication with the Warehouse Supervisors on the daily movement of raw materials and the issuance of
customs documents when required for the new ABIL bonded warehouse.
• The ability to meet customs officers to discuss queries, resolve issues for clearances and perform all duties of a Grade 2
clerk (in-house and on the field) when required.
• Act as the primary point of contact for customs and logistics-related inquiries from management, suppliers, and
customers.
• Manage relationships with haulers and freight forwarders, negotiating competitive rates and improving service levels.
• Work closely with procurement and sales teams to align shipping schedules with inventory needs.
• Ensure documentation for all cleared shipments, including tracking costs and maintaining records for the
Customs/Logistics Department daily.
• Analyze logistics performance metrics to identify inefficiencies and propose cost-saving measures.
• Liaising with our internal accounting department to reconcile payments to vendors for customs and logistics
departments.
• Assist in customs and logistics budgeting and forecasting, providing insights into freight costs and trends.
• Ensure that the Customs/Logistics Department operates in compliance with international trade laws and company
policies.
• Schedule and coordinate meetings within the Customs/Logistics Department and with external stakeholders.
• Record meeting minutes and disbursement of attendees within a 24hour after meeting, ensuring accurate
documentation of key discussions and action items are captured.
• Collaborate on virtual meetings using platforms such as Microsoft Teams and Zoom.
• Proficiently utilize Microsoft applications (Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Outlook) for day-to-day operations, reporting, and 3
documentation.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS / EDUCATION:
• Specialization or Certification in Supply Chain Management, Business Administration, or a related field.
• Must have a minimum Customs Grade 2 certification or higher.
SKILLS / EXPERIENCE:
• 5+ years of experience in customs clearance, logistics, or supply chain operations.
• Strong knowledge of customs regulations, shipping procedures, and international trade compliance and agreements.
• Experience negotiating with shipping lines and haulers to optimize freight costs.
• Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite: Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Outlook, and Teams.
• Familiarity with virtual meeting platforms such as Zoom.
• Excellent analytical skills, with the ability to identify cost-saving opportunities and process improvements.
• Ability to work in a fast-paced customs/logistics environment and handle unexpected challenges.
