preservation, conservation and restoration of Jamaica’s tangible heritage and material cultural remains. The role ensures the effective development and implementation of preservation and conservation management programmes.

KEY RESPONSIBILITES & COMPETENCIES

 

  • Develop and document an effective preservation/conservation management programme, in keeping with established standards and protocols.
  • Implement and monitor the effectiveness of the preservation/conservation management programme, propose improvements to procedures as required.
  • Provide technical expertise in specialty areas as well as theoretical and practical training in conservation management to internal and external stakeholders.
  • Implement preventive and remedial conservation procedures and systems in accordance with acceptable standards and Code of Ethics.
  • Ensure that laboratory procedures are carried out in accordance with documented requirements. 
  • Maintain project budget and collaborate with team members to ensure all aspects of the project continue to operate smoothly.
  • Manage the conservation facilities by supervising workflow, maintaining supplies and equipment as well as developing the laboratory and workshop facilities in conjunction with direct reports.
  • Advise on environmental controls, disaster risk management, and preventive conservation strategies.
  • Participate in workshops and other public fora in order to maintain required standards as well as disseminate information to stakeholders.

        Human Resource Responsibilities:

 

  • Manage the welfare and development of direct reports through the preparation of performance appraisals and recommendation of required training and development programmes.
  • Provide leadership to staff through effective objective setting, delegation, and communication.
  • Provide guidance to staff through coaching, mentoring and training, providing assistance and support as needed.
  • Participate in the recruitment of staff for the department.
  • Ensure that staff is aware of and adhere to the policies, procedures and regulations of the Department and the JNHT
  • Ensure staff is effectively utilized to achieve departmental objectives and enhance their professional and/or personal development.
  • Ensure the welfare and developmental needs of staff within the span of control are clearly identified and addressed to ensure the maintenance of a cadre of highly motivated and productive employees.
  • Provide leadership to direct reports by creating the vision, encouraging a team approach and motivating them towards accomplishing objectives and fulfilling responsibilities.
  • Set clear, result-oriented goals with realistic and measurable outcomes for direct reports.
  • Ensure that direct reports are informed of health and safety requirements and are adequately trained to carry out their work safely.

        QUALIFICATION

 

  • Master of Science in Conservation, Archaeology/Archive and Museum Studies, Art Conservation/Art History, Fine Art/Visual Art, or equivalent from a recognized tertiary institution.
  • Courses in Chemistry/Physics/Biology/Biochemistry and Conservation.
