Certified Dental Surgery Assistant

The incumbent will work under the supervision of the APH Dentist and provide support with patient care assisting with procedures, sterilizing instruments, preparing patients, and managing clinic operations.

Key Responsibilities:

• Assembles gauze packs and cotton swabs.
• Assists Dentist during the surgical and non-surgical treatment of patients.
• Checks stock, maintains stock cards and prepares stock requisition as required.
• Cleans and sterilizes instruments and prepares clinic for use by Dentist.
• Carry out Customer Service Representative duties including but not limited to maintaining records on patient dental and medical history.
• Comforts / counsels patients before and during dental procedures and assist with post-extraction instructions.
• Maintains patient appointment records for Dentist.
• Performs blood pressure and other testing on patients as required.
• Performs charting of patients’ teeth and maintains a record of patients’ dental charts.
• Prepares reports and returns pertaining to output of work.
• Advises patients on brushing and flossing of teeth techniques.
• Reports malfunction of equipment to the Dentist.
• Takes and develops dental radiographs.
• Perform any other related duties as required by the job function.

 Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

• Capable of writing reports and keeping accurate patient records.
• Capable of rendering cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and First Aid. 
• Knowledge of the Microsoft Office Suite.
• Knowledge of dental anatomy, sterilization and dental instruments.
• Knowledge of the administration of oral hygiene.
• Ability to assimilate in-service training provided by the Dentist.  
• Ability to establish and maintain good working relationships with other employees and the public.

 Minimum Training and Experience:

• Certificate in Dental Surgery Assistant from an accredited Dental School.
• Five (5) ‘O’Levels subjects inclusive of Mathematics and English A.
• A minimum of four (4) year experience in the field.
