About The Role
The UWI St. Augustine Campus is seeking a dynamic and results-oriented Business Development Manager, on an individual consultancy basis, to lead the commercialisation and market expansion of its UWI Made products, including the operations of UWI Seal-It Ltd (Seal-It), a UWI subsidiary company that manufactures and installs roofing compounds and primers. The Business Development Manager will also support commercialisation of other selected UWI Made Products.
UWI Made is the official commercial umbrella brand launched by The University of the West Indies (The UWI), St. Augustine Campus in 2024. The brand showcases high-quality, research-backed products and services developed through the university's tradition of research and innovation. These offerings include a range of manufactured goods and technologies designed to meet regional needs with international standards. Among the flagship products under the UWI Made brand are:
(I) UWI Seal-It Ltd’s asphalt-based coatings and sealants;
(II) a locally developed biopesticide and plant growth stimulant tailored to Caribbean agricultural conditions; and
(III) UWI Milk and some other innovative products and services.
Job Description
The Business Development Manager, reporting directly to the Campus Principal, is responsible for the market development of 3 UWI flagship products/services including Seal-It’s products and services, biopesticides and UWI Milk. The incumbent is expected to dedicate approximately 50% - 70% of working time to Seal-It, with the remaining time spent on business development support for other UWI made products/services.
Key Responsibilities
The incumbent will be generally responsible for:
I. Operational Effectiveness – Ensures that production systems, processes, and resources are optimized to achieve marketing objectives and maintain accurate, efficient inventory management.
II. Performance Reporting - Prepares and presents timely reports on sales, market development, and business growth initiatives to support data-driven decision-making
III. Market development - Identifies and evaluates new market opportunities, cultivates strategic partnerships, and negotiates marketing, sales, and distribution arrangements as approved by the Campus Principal or designate
IV. Collaboration - Works closely with researchers, project teams, and external stakeholders to advance commercial initiatives and deliver evidence-based performance reports to leadership
V. Performs any other related duties as assigned by the Campus Principal or her designate.
Seal-It-related duties
The incumbent will be responsible for the following:
I. Develops and implements annual sales and production targets aligned with strategic goals.
II. Manages Seal-It’s product portfolio to ensure quality, competitiveness, and market relevance.
III. In coordination with the Operations Manager, establishes and oversees the company’s production processes, systems and strategy.
IV. Directs installation and service delivery to ensure high standards, cost control, and client satisfaction.
V. Ensures sound financial management, reporting compliance, and budget discipline.
VI. Leads business development and stakeholder engagement to expand market reach and partnerships.
VII. Monitors and reports on operational performance, productivity, and financial outcomes.
VIII. Represents Seal-It at industry and promotional events to enhance brand visibility and credibility.
Reporting
I. The incumbent reports to the Campus Principal.
II. The incumbent shall coordinate work with project leaders and team members.
Required Qualifications and Experience:
I. A minimum of a recognised Bachelor’s Degree, or equivalent from a recognised tertiary level institution.
II. A minimum of 5 years in a leadership role in manufacturing, marketing, business development, project management or similar experience.
III. Experience working within the manufacturing sector with emphasis on market expansion that engages both corporate and government entities within Trinidad & Tobago and the wider Caribbean Region would be ideal.
IV. Other suitable qualifications and/or experience will be considered.
