We are seeking an experienced Barge Captain to safely, efficiently and courteously operate the barge, ensuring that all barge-related rules and regulations are followed by all users.
ESSENTIAL TECHNICAL SKILLS
Vessel handling & navigation: Proficient in steering, maneuvering and docking a single engine tug affixed to a barge, in various weather conditions, including strong currents, wind, and narrow channels to ensure vessel safety and operational effectiveness.
Pre-departure checks: Ensure the tug and barge are inspected for safe and proper operation of equipment prior to loading.
Cargo management: Skilled in loading, securing and unloading, with focus on vessel stability, trim and weight distribution to prevent cargo damage or capsizing.
Systems Operations: Familiarity with hydraulic, mechanical and electrical systems, including pumps, winches and generator maintenance.
Navigation equipment: Proficiency in using GPS, radar and other navigational aids.
Rules of the road: Comprehensive understanding of maritime laws and local regulations.
Maintenance: Carry out maintenance of cables, ropes, rigging and general appearance of barge.
Crew Management: Provide guidance and directions to barge mates/deckhands.
Disaster Preparedness: Ensure the safe mooring of equipment during preparations for hurricane or bad weather.
REQUIREMENTS
Secondary school diploma required
Current Boat Master’s License (minimum level II) and maritime course required
At least 3-5 years of experience as a barge captain preferred.
Good knowledge of Caribbean and Antiguan waterways and conditions
Physically fit and agile. Able to lift up to 100lbs.
20/20 vision (with corrective lenses if required); able to identify red and green colours
Good communication and interpersonal skills, especially verbal
Ability to work all shifts including evenings, on weekends and public holidays.
Other
Legally authorized to work in Antigua and Barbuda without requiring a work permit.
