Job Summary
The Automotive Electrician is responsible for diagnosing, repairing, installing, and maintaining electrical and electronic systems in vehicles and related equipment. This role ensures all electrical components operate safely and efficiently to maintain the high performance and reliability of the company’s fleet and customers’ vehicles.
Summary of Key Duties and Responsibilities
- Diagnose electrical faults using diagnostic tools and schematic diagrams.
- Repair and maintain vehicle wiring, alternators, starter motors, batteries, lighting, and ignition systems.
- Install and service vehicle alarm systems, GPS, sensors, and other electronic accessories.
- Perform testing of charging and starting systems and ensure compliance with safety standards.
- Conduct preventive maintenance checks and electrical system inspections on vehicles.
- Document work performed and parts used on job cards and report to the Workshop Supervisor.
- Assist in training apprentices and providing guidance on electrical maintenance procedures.
- Maintain a clean and organized work area, observing workshop safety and environmental policies.
- Participate in periodic tool audits and maintain proper care of diagnostic equipment.
- Perform any other related duties as assigned by the shift foreman/supervisor.
- Drive vehicles as needed, especially in the absence of a duty driver.
Requirements
- Certificate or Diploma in Automotive Electrical Engineering or equivalent technical qualification.
- Minimum of three (3) years’ experience in automotive electrical maintenance or similar environment.
- Sound knowledge of vehicle electrical systems, diagnostic tools, and fault-finding techniques.
- Experience working with both diesel and petrol vehicle systems is preferred.
- Familiarity with computerized maintenance management systems (e.g., ShopBoss, WMS) is an asset.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to read and interpret electrical diagrams and technical manuals.
- Attention to detail and commitment to quality workmanship.
- Excellent communication and teamwork skills.
- Strong safety awareness and adherence to SHAW Act standards.
Working Conditions
- Workshop environment with exposure to noise, grease, and electrical equipment.
- Requires use of personal protective equipment (PPE).
- May involve occasional overtime, weekend, or on-site work assignments.
