Our client, Venture Credit Union, is seeking to fill the position of Assistant Accountant.
JOB SUMMARY
The Assistant Accountant is responsible for the administration of the accounting system to ensure the integrity of accounting records by coordinating the day-to-day execution of core accounting functions, maintaining robust internal controls, ensuring compliance with regulatory and financial reporting standards, and delivering accurate, timely financial information.
The Assistant Accountant also plays a key role in maintaining the reliability of financial data used for decision-making and external reporting and supports organisational strategy through diligent cash flow management, budget coordination, and policy development. By mentoring direct reports, collaborating across departments, and liaising with external auditors, the Assistant Accountant ensures financial transparency, integrity, and continuity within the organisation.
DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
- Ensures that all established accounting standards, policies, procedures and internal controls are consistently implemented for the maintenance of accounting best practices and regulatory requirements.
- Liaises with the Accounting Manager to co-ordinate the execution of month-end closeout to ensure accurate financial reporting. All non-conformance or financial concerns must be proactively reported to the Accounting Manager for corrective measures.
- Oversees the organisation’s treasury management function to ensure effective cash flow maintenance, liquidity monitoring and surplus funds planning.
- Assists in the preparation of the Credit Union’s annual budget by gathering financial and economic data, analysing trends, and providing input to support accurate forecasting and effective financial planning.
- Each month conducts thorough reviews of all accounting entries, such as Accounts Payables, Payroll and Revenues, on the system by validating supporting documentation to guarantee accuracy and transactional integrity.
- Spearheads the timely preparation and submission of statutory documents.
- Ensures the adherence to IFRS by applying appropriate accounting treatment to complex financial instruments and investment products, thereby safeguarding compliance and accuracy in financial reporting.
- Monitors bank and assigned reconciliation entries to ensure timely completion. All variances must be reviewed and resolved in consultation with the Accounting Manager.
- Supervises direct reports to enhance team efficiency and accuracy.
- Prepares and maintains the audit schedule and documentation to support audit readiness year-round.
- Any other duties relevant to the Accounts Department as assigned by the Accounting Manager.
QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE
- ACCA – Level Two professional designation
- Minimum of five (5) years of progressive accounting experience, preferably in the Credit Union or financial services sector.
- Strong knowledge of International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS), local tax laws, industry regulations and credit union bye-laws.
