Assistant Accountant - Financial Reporting

Job Summary

  • Monitor transactions transferred to the General Ledger from the various business application system to ensure accuracy of final accounts.
  • Ensure the accurate preparation and maintenance of the accounts and financial statements within the specified submission deadlines.
  • Maintain Fixed Asset Register in accordance with accounting principles.
  • Assist with the management of the department by supporting a cohesive work team and contribute to staff development.

 Education, Knowledge and Experience

  • Five (5) O’ level passes including English Language and Math
  • Two (2) A’ level passes
  • Level II - ACCA or CIMA, CPA, CMA
  • Accounting software certification and training would be an asset
  • Knowledge of company’s financial procedures
  • Knowledge of IAS/IFRS accounting
  • Knowledge of the legislation governing insurance accounting
  • Knowledge of company products and Chart of Accounts
  • Proficiency in the use of office tools and software relevant to job functions.
  • Four (4) years’ experience in an accounting environment, preferably in the insurance industry, including two (2) years in a supervisory position.

 Key Responsibilities

  • Reviews business procedures and develops document workflows that would ensure accounting documents are available to authorised users.
  • Ensure all bank reconciliations are prepared and reviewed on a weekly, monthly or as required by department policy and takes necessary action.
  • Ensure all suspense accounts are reconciled on a weekly, monthly or as required by department policy and takes necessary action.
  • Ensure all internal control procedures are performed in accordance with procedure and take action as necessary.
  • Implements approved performance standards and monitors to ensure performance in line with pre-determined standards.
  • Review all coding performed by the junior staff.
  • Monitors activities in the unit to ensure policies, procedures and guidelines are adhered to at all times.
  • Maintain a relationship with all banks.
  • Document policies and procedures within the Accounting and Treasury cycle.
  • Ensure the timely processing of stop payments.
  • Assists with the on-going evaluation of employees and recommends the appropriate training and development plans where necessary.
  • Perform any other duties related to the job function as may be assigned.
