Job Purpose:

The Accounting Manager is responsible for leading the financial stewardship of the credit union, by overseeing all aspects of financial planning, budgeting, treasury, financial reporting, risk mitigation, regulatory compliance and procurement to ensure the viability, integrity, transparency, and regulatory alignment of its financial operations. This role exists to safeguard the organization’s financial health by delivering accurate financial statements, enforcing financial governance, and optimizing accounting processes in accordance with International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS), local laws, industry regulations and the credit union’s bye-laws.

 

Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Participates in and advises on strategic initiatives.
  • Supports governance responsibilities, including policy development and fiduciary oversight.
  • Leads the organisation-wide budgeting process, coordinating with senior and executive management to ensure alignment of financial resources with strategic priorities.
  • Presents financial results and key metrics to the Board of Directors and executive team with clear analysis and actionable insights.
  • Ensures timely and accurate preparation of financial statements in accordance with IFRS and applicable regulatory standards.
  • Leads and manages the procurement function, including strategic sourcing, tendering, contract negotiation, supplier management, and purchasing controls.
  • Oversees all internal and external reporting to stakeholders including auditors, regulators and Board Committees, ensuring adherence to quality standards, internal reporting timetables and external deadlines.
  • Ensures consistent compliance with internal policies and with legal, regulatory, and reporting requirements relevant to credit unions.
  • Maintains awareness of changes in financial regulations and accounting standards affecting credit unions.
  • Manages short- and long-term liquidity to ensure the credit union can meet its operational and lending obligations.
  • Builds relationships with financial institutions and potential capital partners.
  • Designs, implements, and monitors robust internal control frameworks related to financial processes, which safeguard financial assets and mitigate operational risk.
  • Identifies and implements process improvements, including the implementation and upgrade of financial systems, to enhance financial accuracy, efficiency, and automation.
  • Ensures readiness for audits and regulatory reviews and leads the implementation of corrective action.
  • Ensures segregation of duties, appropriate authorisation levels, and effective monitoring of key control points.
  • Fosters a high-performance culture within the Accounts team with continuous improvement practices and professional development opportunities, considering succession planning.
  • Performs any other related duties based on the exigencies of the Society.

Qualifications:

  • ACCA or equivalent professional designation.
  • MBA or Masters in Finance or related field will be an asset
  • Certification in Procurement or Supply Chain Management (e.g., CIPS Level 4 or higher) will be an advantage.

Experience:

  • A minimum of (8) years’ progressive financial leadership experience, preferably within credit unions, banks, or financial services, with at least 3 years overseeing procurement or similar cross-functional roles..
  • A minimum of (3) years in the development and management of published accounts.
  • Proven track record of managing large teams and advising executive leadership
  • Experience working with or reporting to a Board of Directors and regulatory bodies

  • Deep familiarity with credit union legislation, regulations, and co-operative finance and procurement best practices.
  • Mastery of end-to-end accounting processes, reconciliations, and financial close cycles.
  • Strong grasp of liquidity risk, interest rate management, and capital planning within a regulated financial entity.
  • Skilled in financial modelling, variance analysis, and business planning.
  • Proficiency in accounting software and enterprise procurement tools.

Leadership:

  • Aligns financial operations with the credit union’s long-term strategy.
  • Proven ability to lead and develop diverse teams.
  • Influential communicator with strong negotiation skills.
  • Collaborative leader who builds trust and alignment across departments.
