Job Summary:
We are seeking a detail-oriented Research & Development Chemist to support product development, testing, and quality improvement. The role involves formulating and evaluating products, conducting laboratory analysis, and collaborating with Quality Control and Production teams to ensure consistency and efficiency. The ideal candidate will have a strong analytical mindset, hands-on laboratory skills, and experience within the paint manufacturing industry.
Job Qualifications:
- A bachelor's degree in chemistry or a related discipline is required specifically materials science.
- The candidate will have a strong knowledge of mathematics and should like working with their hands building scientific apparatus and performing laboratory experiments and computer modeling/simulation and testing.
- Perseverance, curiosity, and the ability to concentrate on detail and to work independently are essential. Interaction among specialists in this field is increasing, especially for chemists in formulation development.
- The candidate will be able to work in interdisciplinary teams. Therefore, some understanding of other disciplines, including business and marketing or economics, is desirable, along with leadership ability and good oral and written communication skills.
- The incumbent will be required to interact with quality control Lab, perform analytical testing, or assist the Production Department, as is required.
Experience:
A minimum of two (2) years in the field of chemistry and professional work experience in a paint manufacturing industry is required.
Core Functions:
Under supervision of the Chief Chemist /Senior Chemist and in accordance with directives from the Technical & Manufacturing Process Manager and The Quality Control Manager, the Chemist/Process Analyst will be required to undertake the following core responsibilities:
- Assist and coordinate the testing of incoming raw material ensuring that procedures are followed, and documentation kept current / up to date
- Request, log and test samples on a continuous basis to compile a database of alternative raw material and supplier.
- Research new products and make proposals for development / improvement of products.
- Formulating new products and re-formulating existing products
- Laboratory mixing and testing - along with R&D Analyst – of samples of new formulations.
- Assist in the continued implementation of the Quality Management System (QMS)
- Develop a strong understanding of the product lines and their appropriate uses and interactions in a variety of applications in the industry.
- Assisting the Production Department (and QC Lab) with assigned projects and conducting research based on issues arising in the manufacturing process
- Working in and in-between the R&D and QC labs analyzing the Production Process for formulation cost, product quality and consistency between batches
- Assist in product and color development processes – R&D
- Routine quality control testing – QC lab
- Review and analyze in-process formulation and additions of extra raw material to production batches
- Review of batch ticket to identify products needing reformulation to improve quality, cost, and colorant usage.
- Maintain a notebook of daily assignments with project update and status.
- Prepare a monthly report summarizing main projects for the period
