Consultant – Accident & Emergency Department

The Dominica Hospitals Authority is seeking applications from highly qualified and motivated medical professionals to fill the position of Consultant, Accident and Emergency (A&E) Department at the Dominica China Friendship Hospital. This senior role is critical to strengthening emergency care services and ensuring that patients receive timely, expert, and compassionate treatment in moments of greatest need.
Position Summary
Reporting to the Hospital Medical Director, the Consultant, A&E Department will:
- Lead and manage accident and emergency cases with the highest standard of clinical care.
- Provide expert guidance, mentorship, and training to medical staff.
- Oversee patient care in compliance with established protocols and regulations.
- Lead mass casualty preparedness and response efforts.
- Contribute to the development of policies, guidelines, and protocols to strengthen the delivery of emergency care.

Key Responsibilities
Clinical Care & Leadership
- Diagnose, investigate, and treat patients in the A&E setting.
- Provide consultant-level expertise and perform all necessary emergency procedures efficiently.
- Offer clinical leadership and support to junior doctors and nurses.
- Ensure optimum patient care and satisfaction.
Workforce Development
- Supervise physicians and ensure accurate, high-quality patient records.
- Lead training for medical and nursing staff in both clinical practice and mass casualty management.
- Ensure adequate physician coverage within the A&E Department.
Quality & Compliance
- Develop and update medical protocols, guidelines, and clinical policies.
- Monitor adherence to legal, regulatory, and organizational standards.
- Prepare timely, accurate reports, including police and coroner’s reports where required.
- Hold discussions with patients’ families and caregivers to provide updates and guidance.
Operational Oversight
- Maintain discipline, professionalism, and ethical conduct across the A&E team.
- Provide coverage during colleagues’ absences as necessary.
- Participate in quality assurance activities and ensure continuous improvement in care delivery.
Qualifications & Experience
- Postgraduate Degree in Emergency Medicine from an accredited university.
- Minimum of five (5) years’ post-specialization experience as a Specialist Medical Officer in Emergency Medicine.
- Registered Medical Practitioner with eligibility for registration with the Medical Board of the Commonwealth of Dominica.

- Expert knowledge of emergency medicine, clinical protocols, and patient care standards.
- Strong leadership, mentoring, and decision-making skills.
- Advanced communication and interpersonal skills, with high emotional intelligence.
- Proven ability to manage resources, coordinate emergency teams, and respond under pressure.
- Strong administrative, problem-solving, and conflict management skills.
- Proficiency in IT systems and hospital management software.
Remuneration
An attractive package will be offered, commensurate with qualifications and experience.
Tenure
Employment will be on a contractual or permanent basis.
