IR Officer (Temporary)

Main Purpose of Job:

The Industrial Relations Officer (Temporary) will support both the operational and research functions of the ER/IR team during a temporary assignment. This role will involve handling day-to-day employee and industrial relations matters while also conducting research and data analysis to inform policy and improve employee relations as may be applicable. The incumbent will assist in managing and reporting on grievances, supporting union engagements, documenting disciplinary matters, and tracking compliance, while also providing data-driven insights and support to the ER/IR team

 

Key Duties and Responsibilities:

Employee & Industrial Relations Management

  • Assist in handling grievances, investigations, and disciplinary matters in line with company policy and collective agreements.
  • Liaise with supervisors, managers, union representatives, and other stakeholders to gather information and provide ER/IR advisory support.
  • Participate in union-management meetings and provide follow-up documentation.
  • Support initiatives that foster a positive work culture and industrial harmony.
  • Record minutes during disciplinary hearings and union meetings as assigned.
  • Assist in the implementation of ER/IR initiatives and projects.
  • Maintain accurate ER/IR records including disciplinary and grievance tracking.

 

Administrative & Policy Support

  • Conduct research on labour laws, collective agreements, case law, and industrial relations trends.
  • Assist in analyzing grievance and disciplinary data to identify patterns and develop improvement recommendations.
  • Assist in preparing reports, and presentations to support decision-making.
  • Assist in evaluating the effectiveness of ER/IR policies and recommending enhancements.

 

Collective Bargaining & Negotiation Support

  • Support collective bargaining preparations through research and documentation.
  • Assist in maintaining documentation and tracking commitments in MOUs and CBAs.
  • Monitor compliance with labour legislation and internal policies.
  • Support the preparation of compliance audits and reporting.

 

Administrative & Data Support

  • Maintain databases of ER/IR metrics, research findings, and case records.
  • Prepare and process invoices and requisitions related to ER/IR activities.
  • Develop and update dashboards and reporting tools to communicate key ER/IR metrics.
  • Ensure timely and secure filing of documentation in alignment with records retention policies.

   

Required Qualifications and Experience:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Management, Industrial Relations, Labour Studies, or a related field.
  • 1 – 3 years’ experience in a similar role.
  • Certification in Industrial Relations or Labour Studies preferred.
  • Experience with data analysis, report writing, and policy development is an asset.
  • Experience in a manufacturing or unionized environment is desirable.

 

Required Knowledge/ Skills/ Abilities 

  • Strong communication, interpersonal, and relationship management skills.
  • Sound knowledge of industrial relations, labor laws, and grievance procedures.
  • Ability to conduct research and analyze data to support policy decisions.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
  • Experience with SAP or similar HR systems is an asset.
  • High attention to detail, organizational skills, and ability to work independently.
  • Strong time management and multitasking skills.
  • Ability to handle confidential information with discretion
  • Ability to grow and learn in this assigned role.
