WELDER HELPERS-FREEPORT

A welder helper plays a crucial role in the field of welding, providing support and assistance to professional welders. While they do not execute the actual welding tasks, they contribute significantly to the process. Here are some key aspects of their job:

  • Assisting Lead Welders: Welder helpers work alongside experienced welders during welding projects. They assist in various welding, brazing, or cutting tasks to ensure high-quality welds.
  • Preventative Maintenance: Helpers conduct preventative maintenance on welding equipment and tools. They inspect working implements to identify faults and facilitate repairs or replacement of worn parts.
  • Work piece Preparation: Before welding, they clean work pieces using grinders or scrapers to remove foreign matter like slag, scale, and rust. They also read and interpret production schedules and blueprints to determine project specifications.
  • Metal Assembly: Helpers use bracing and measurement tools (such as calipers, squares, and straightedges) to lay out and assemble metal parts for welding. They assist welders in grinding, heat-bending, or bolting metal components together.
  • Quality Control: Welder helpers evaluate work pieces to ensure they are defect-free and conform to set specifications. They monitor fitting and welding processes to prevent work pieces from shrinking or expanding due to overheating.
  • Material Handling: Helpers lift and load work materials onto welding tables or into positions using hoists, pry bars, and cranes. They also connect cutting torches to gas cylinders or electric power sources.
  • Safety and Coordination: Complying with safety guidelines, welder helpers set up ladders, scaffolding, and other platforms necessary for welding activities. They also signal crane operators or other construction workers to coordinate work operations.
  • Additional Tasks: As needed, they carry out various other tasks assigned by welders.

  • To become a welder helper, a high school diploma and training or an Associate's degree in welding technology are typically required.
