Terminal/Port Head Mechanic and Maintenance Lead

Scope of Work:
The Head Mechanic and Maintenance position is distinguished from other mechanic classes by the assumed responsibility level and the complexity of duties assigned. The Head Mechanic
performs and oversees the most challenging and duties. The head mechanic provides supervision to assigned staff performing and overseeing the technical work of the unit and provides administrative support to the assigned unit.

Key Responsibilities:
 

  • Leads, plans, trains, reviews the work of staff, and assigns staff responsible for performing a variety of skilled, semi-skilled, and unskilled technical diagnostic, repair, and maintenance work on a variety of light and heavy equipment.
  • Participates actively in performing the most complex work of the unit, including the more complex maintenance assignments, as well as administrative support duties.
  • Trains assigned employees in maintenance and repair methods, procedures, and techniques.
  • Leads, assigns and inspects the work of subordinates and participates in all associated work.
  • Ensures compliance with applicable standards and specifications by reviewing work performed for accuracy.
  • Ensures adherence to safe work practices and procedures and assists in evaluating employees.
  • Operates and maintains a complete set of hand, power, and shop tools and computerized diagnostic and test equipment used in the automotive and truck repair trade.
  • Performs general maintenance on trucks, other light and heavy equipment, and other standard vehicle maintenance duties.
  • Prescribes procedures, methods, and materials on complex projects as assigned.
  • Coordinates equipment maintenance activities with other maintenance department, which includes inspecting diagnosis and locating technical and electrical issues on all Terminal equipment such as: Trucks, Ship to shore cranes, Mobile harbor cranes, Fixed port solutions, Reach stacker, Top loaders, Forklifts.
  • Determines the extent of necessary repairs, scheduling of repairs, and associated cost and material estimates.
  • Recommends contract work as necessary; locates and recommends vendors.
  • Prepares requisitions or orders for replacement parts and supplies.
  • May assist in budget preparation by recommending equipment expenditures and Fleet Services.
  • Reads and interprets schematics, shop manuals, and other related materials when performing work assignments and staying abreast of current technology.
  • Accesses technical information from automated databases; enters data into and retrieves prints and generates vehicle, equipment, and work order reports from the computer information system.
  • Maintains work, time, material, and equipment maintenance logs and records.
  • May respond or assign the response to emergency service calls for repairing or towing equipment that has been broken down away from the shop.



Required Skills and Education:
 

  • This position requires education and experience reflecting possession of the required knowledge and skills. A typical combination would include the following:
  • Graduation from high school and completion of an approved apprenticeship program
  • 5-8 years of experience doing a variety of skilled mechanic's work primarily on heavy equipment.
  • 5 years of experience as Port Equipment Head Mechanic.
  • Knowledge of materials and methods used in heavy and light equipment maintenance and repair.
  • Must know operating principles of internal combustion engines.
  • Be knowledgeable of theory and operation of electrical components (up to 24 volts) and related equipment.
  • Must be able to operate independently.
