TECHNOLOGY, RESEARCH AND INNOVATION OFFICER
The Caribbean Maritime University (CMU), the only specialized maritime university in the English-speaking Caribbean, is inviting applications for Technology, Research and Innovation Officer (Level 7).
SUMMARY
The Technology Research & Innovation Officer will be responsible for the discovery and studying of new and emerging technologies that are relevant to the enhancement of the university’s goals. This officer will have the primary role of continuous exploration and rationalization of new technological discoveries. The Technology Research & Innovation Officer will report to the Manager, Solution Development & Research and will have the responsibility of presenting approved findings to the management team as directed by the Manager.
Qualifications & Experience
- Bachelor’s Degree in Information Technology; Computer Science; Computer/Software Engineering; or any other related fields
- At least three (3) years related experience
- Excellent knowledge of software programming languages and tools such as Python, Java, PHP, JavaScript, XML, CSS, HTML5, XHTML, UML etc.
- Working knowledge of Microsoft Windows, Microsoft Windows Server, Linux and UNIX operating systems
- Good knowledge of SQL including the ability to write scripts, store procedures etc.
- Good knowledge of open-source technologies related to software development
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
- Sound knowledge of IT systems, equipment and capabilities.
- Sound knowledge of Enterprise Resource Planning Systems, Learning Management Systems and Financial Management Systems
- Sound knowledge of the information systems environment and current trends.
- Sound knowledge of database management.
- Sound knowledge of enterprise networking and data communications
- Knowledge of the University’s policies, rules and regulations.
- Knowledge of Project Management.
- Knowledge of python programming
- A working knowledge of SQL and database technologies
- Teaching experience
- Experience with database management
- Working knowledge of multiple web design technologies, such as HTML4/5, WordPress
- Understanding of fundamental database principles/concepts
- Ability to use data visualization tools such as tableau, open refine, Microsoft Power BI, Datawrapper etc.
Key Primary duties and responsibilities:
- Designs, develops, and implements application enhancements to the University’s Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP), Learning Management System (LMS) and any other software systems used.
- Explores new and emerging technologies that may improve the University’s delivery or learning tools and business process systems etc.
- Review user needs and requests and develops proposed solutions for system enhancements.
- Uses higher programming languages to write and modify programs, systems, and databases to meet design specifications.
- Debugs, tests, and documents various complex programs using on-line tools, assigned languages and utilities.
- Reviews and analyzes data relating to actively used systems at the University and present findings.
- Conducts Survey and collects data to support the Qualtrics survey platform as well as an instance of REDCap and Survey Monkey.
- Provides leadership in long-range planning in the use of technology in research and assist in the effective implementation and use.
- Provides oversight on the day-to-day operation of the Learning Management System and other Research Technology resources.
- Customizes environments as requested by research teams, with specific focus on the optimization of end-users’ experiences.
- Designs and produces custom learning and researched reports.
- Creates/Modifies instructor led sessions and publish learning objectives.
- Research technology issues to access trends, make recommendations, and communicate innovations to the manager of the unit.
- Collaborates with the University’s leadership in developing methods for evaluating the effectiveness of research initiatives.
- Creates, deploys, and analyses electronic data from training systems and surveys.
- Develops statistical reports with synthesized data results from training systems and surveys.
- Documents standard operating procedures.
- Provides technical support in the planning and organization of workshops for faculty and staff focusing on the use of innovative technologies in and research and teaching.
- Research, designs, and develops user guides for faculty, students, and staff.
- Coordinates with the course development team, Deans of Graduate Studies and Research, other Deans, Executive Directors, Lecturers, and Instructors to implement requested changes based on feedback including the necessary transfer of data.

- Satisfactory collaboration maintained with the University’s entities resulting in efficient linkages of all stakeholders’ systems.
