The Technical Assistant has responsibility for assisting/supporting the Conservation Unit’s laboratory work by measuring solutions ensuring that the appropriate proportions required for use in the conservation of any object/artefact being worked on are provided.

Technical Assistant, SOG/ST 3 (Pay band 5), salary range $2,190,302 – $2,945,712

 

Job Summary

 Under the direct supervision of the Conservator the Technical Assistant has responsibility for assisting/supporting the Conservation Unit’s laboratory work by measuring solutions ensuring that the appropriate proportions required for use in the conservation of any object/artefact being worked on are provided.

 

KEY RESPONSIBILITES & COMPETENCIES

  • Make up and measure solutions in the appropriate proportions as required for use on the various types of artifacts.
  • Ensure that the laboratory inventory is maintained at an acceptable working level. Prepare and submit a monthly report detailing the inventory utilized in the previous month as well as activities accomplished for that period.
  • Set up electrolytic tank(s) with the appropriate chemicals and wires as well as metal sheets and attach artifacts appropriately for the electrolytic reduction process.
  • Periodically remove loosened corrosion products mechanically and rewire artifacts into electrolytic tank to continue the reduction process.
  • Assist with the desalination and consolidation of artifacts by executing the appropriate chemical and physical processes.
  • Maintain accurate records of artefacts under treatment, including condition reports, photographs, and treatment notes.
  • Assist in the re-constructing of artifacts as close as possible to their original form using plaster of paris and paste in order to consolidate and support the pieces.
  • Ensure that safety and security standards are maintained and upheld at all times with respect to chemicals used.
  • Fill out conservation cards to ensure that each stage of the processes applied to each artifact is accurately documented.
  • Accompany the dig teams on field trips as requested.
  • Update and develop job knowledge by participating in educational opportunities and reading technical publications.

Proficient in the use of relevant solvents, solutions and chemicals used in the conservation and preservation process.

  • Knowledge and ability to visualize and re-construct artifacts to achieve their original form.
  • Knowledge of related conservation procedures and standards of practice.

  

QUALIFICATION AND EXPERIENCE

  • Associate degree, Diploma, or Certification in Conservation Studies, Museum Studies, Natural Sciences, Chemistry, or a related technical field.
  • At least 2 years’ experience in a conservation laboratory, museum, or similar technical environment.
  • Training in conservation techniques, laboratory safety, or collection care would be an asset.
