The Opportunity
The Tax Attorney will provide high-quality tax and internal legal advisory services while also managing corporate services engagements. This role requires a deep understanding of tax compliance, corporate governance, and the ability to navigate complex legal frameworks. The ideal candidate will demonstrate exceptional analytical skills, a strong commitment to client service, and the ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment.
Key Responsibilities:
Tax Advisory and Compliance:
- Manage a portfolio of clients requiring tax advisory services, including developing budgets and monitoring engagements.
- Provide comprehensive knowledge and reviews of tax case law, drafting opinion papers and memoranda on complex tax issues.
- Ensure accurate tax advisory products are delivered on-time and within budget, identifying areas of exposure and adapting to compliance challenges.
Corporate Services:
- Coordinate board and shareholder meetings for our clients, including preparing agendas, notices, and board packages.
- Attend meetings to take minutes, draft and edit minutes post-meeting, and prepare corporate documents related to decisions made.
- Maintain records of materials provided to the board and ensure compliance with corporate governance regulations.
- Facilitate the preparation and filing of corporate documents with relevant authorities, advising clients on compliance deadlines and obligations.
- Facilitate the incorporation and dissolution of limited liability companies at the Companies Office of Jamaica
- Register business names and branch office at the Companies Office of Jamaica
Internal Legal responsibilities:
Under the direction and supervision of the EYC’s In House Counsel:
- Drafting of legal advice on all areas of the law and any other corporate/business transactions, as may be required.
- Assess legal rights and legal risk of various company structures, and submitting recommendations for any joint venture, limited partnership, external company and/or limited liability company options.
- Drafting, reviewing, analyzing and amending any/all correspondence, legal agreements, briefs, rules, regulations, procedures, policies, legislation and other transaction documents, as required.
- Providing support during negotiations/discussions held on behalf of the firm to create, amend, and execute all legal, corporate or business transactions.
- Managing the tax department’s internal tax legislation library and ensure that they are up to date with all new enactments.
- Providing such other assistance as may be required in connection with the implementation of any/all of the above.
Client Interaction and Management:
- Maintain continuous interaction with clients, managing expectations and ensuring outstanding service delivery.
- Collaborate with tax professionals to provide comprehensive solutions tailored to client needs.
- Support the technology used for board activities, ensuring privacy and confidentiality are upheld
Team Leadership and Development:
- Assist in training and mentoring junior staff, providing performance feedback and guidance.
- Participate in marketing initiatives and represent EY in client engagements.
Knowledge and Skills Requirements:
Technical Skills:
- Knowledge of tax issues, particularly in Jamaica
- Proficiency in researching complex issues using statutes, case law, and practices, with the ability to draft and review legal documents.
- Strong understanding of corporate law, commercial law, and governance services.
Managerial Skills:
- Ability to manage multiple assignments under tight deadlines, demonstrating strong project and risk management skills.
Behavioural Skills:
- Exceptional analytical skills with a keen attention to detail.
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills, capable of interfacing with personnel at all levels.
- A proactive, solution-oriented approach with a commitment to integrity, quality, and confidentiality.
Qualifications:
- Education: Legal Education Certificate and Bachelor of Law
Experience working in professional services or a corporate environment preferred.
