Senior Project Manager

Summary:

The Senior Project Manager, Structural Engineering, supports the Division by providing leadership and technical expertise in the key area of structural engineering.  The incumbent has direct responsibility for a portfolio of construction projects as are assigned. He/she must ensure quality in keeping with international best practices and national construction standards.

The Senior Project Manager, Structural Engineering, is involved in the day to day management of the Human Capital of the Division to ensure a level of job satisfaction in keeping with corporate objectives.

 

Education, Knowledge and Experience

          B.Sc. in Engineering from an accredited academic institution

           MSc in Structural Engineering or related field from an accredited academic institution

           PMP Certification

          Professional registration as an Engineer

       Working knowledge of laws and regulations governing large construction projects 

          In-depth knowledge of Building Codes

        Working knowledge of the Companies’ Act and other relevant legislation

         Working knowledge of  State Financial Regulations

         In-depth knowledge of structural engineering

          In depth knowledge of project management methodologies, techniques and concepts.

        Excellent communication skills – oral and written as well as presentation skills

          Proficiency in the use of Microsoft Office Tools and software relevant to job functions

  • Minimum of  (10) years’ post BSc qualification experience with a minimum of (5) years’ managing large construction/commercial projects with primary responsibility for structural engineering

OR

         Equivalent combination of Qualification, Training and Experience              

 

 

Key Functions and Responsibilities

 

Development of Human Capital

  • Liaises with the HR Department as necessary and ensures that HR policies and procedures are implemented
  • Assists with the orientation of new employees into the Division
  • Ensures the on-going evaluation of junior employees, recommends and implements the appropriate training and development plans where necessary.
  • Develops training plans and facilitates training of all employees within the Division.

 

Management of Department

  • Operates as a critical member of the corporate team in the Construction Division’s strategic planning initiatives
  • Assists in the development of a Divisional Action Plan relevant to structural engineering works
    • Ensures that the records management function is maintained in accordance with the Corporation’s approved policies and procedures
  • Assists in development of standard operating procedures relevant to structural engineering works
  • Assists in developing and monitoring project performance against strategies and plans and takes action as necessary to ensure achievement of goals and objectives
  • Conducts structural engineering designs as directed and oversee the preparation of related engineering drawings both “For Tender” and “For Construction”.
  • Prepares Structural Design Reports and pursue approvals from relevant regulatory authorities.
  • Makes recommendations in the selection of appropriate construction materials
  • Provides technical advice on structural engineering aspects of Construction projects
  • Initiates research assignments and statistics gathering from documentation of RFQ/RFP to sign-off of project(s).
  • Prepares and/or presents monthly or other status/variation reports as required, utilizing the approved formats and software

 

Project Management

  • Attends pre-construction meetings with Clients, Contractors and Consultants as necessary and ensures that decisions taken at such meetings are accurately recorded
  • Assists the Clients in the preparation of User Requirements, ensuring clarity as well as congruence of goals and expectations
  • Ensures that RFQs / RFPs for each project are properly documented and clearly communicated to the relevant personnel in accordance with the Corporation’s approved procedures
  • Participates in the Tender evaluation process as directed
  • Develops and submits project schedules that are in alignment with the  stated end date(s) of assigned projects
  • Ensures that all planning and pre-construction approvals, permits and licenses are obtained for the success of each project
  • Follows-up with relevant personnel to acquire engineering designs, valuation certificates and site inspection reports
  • Mobilizes and manages project resources in an efficient and effective manner
  • Supervises and reports on the performance of Contractors/Consultants relevant structural engineering works
  • Ensures that projects are reviewed and continuously inspected for compliance with building and safety codes and any other relevant regulations.

Health & Safety

 

  • Liaises with the Health and Safety Department to ensure compliance with the Corporation’s legal requirements
  • Facilitates Health and Safety audits as necessary
  • Ensures that Health and Safety issues which have been highlighted and/or officially reported are addressed within the stipulated timeframes
  • Facilitates the conduct of HSE related investigations as may be required

 

Cost & Budget Management

  • Provides oversight and guidance on cost estimates relevant to structural engineering matters
  • Ensures that Project Managers/Clerk of Works effectively assesses, signs off and approves Payment Certificates from Contractors and / or Consultants.
  • Prepares, edits and /or presents Board/Cabinet Notes as directed

Communication and Relationship Building

  • Assists in maintaining effective working relationships with key internal and external stakeholders
  • Performs any other duties related to the job function as may be necessary

The Office holder will be recruited on a contractual basis.
