The Department of Health Services invites suitably qualified applicants to apply for the position of Medical Officer (Senior Medical Officer- A&E)
MANDATE
The Senior Medical officer (SMO) is generally accountable for the provision of Emergency Medicine services to specific patients/clients of the Department of Health Services based on generally acceptable standards.
The SMO will Serve as lead physician within the Accident and Emergency Department at the Princess Alexandra Hospital in the emergency management of HAA clients/patients.
The SMO is also expected to assist in the formulation of policies, guidelines and protocols relative to evidence-based, high quality, patient centered care.
KEY FUNCTIONS
- Serve as lead physician within the Accident and Emergency Department at the Princess Alexandra Hospital in the emergency management of DHS clients/patients.
- Examine, diagnose, treat, educate and follow up DHS patients/clients in accordance with generally accepted principles and best practices of the medical profession.
- Provide rapid assessment, diagnosis, and treatment of patients presenting with acute and critical conditions.
- Provide routine medical services in accordance with legal and statutory requirements.
- Manage and support the A&E team of doctors, to ensure smooth operation.
- Mentor and train junior doctors and medical staff in emergency medicine and procedures.
- Ensure adherence to clinical protocols, and manage risk and patient safety within the department.
- Participate in the promotion of health and wellness programmes.
- Provide a range of medical services in the area of emergency medicine for the enhancement of primary, secondary and tertiary health care.
KEY DUTIES
- Serve as lead for the physician team in the Accident and Emergency Department for the emergency care of HAA patients/clients.
- Conduct examinations, diagnose, treat, educate and follow up patients.
- Perform and supervise the initial assessment, stabilization, and treatment of patients in the A&E department.
- Make quick, evidence-based decisions in critical situations to ensure the best patient outcomes.
- Perform medical procedures on designated patients.
- Admit, conduct patient assessments and discharge patients as required.
- Provide a range of medical services for the enhancement of primary, secondary and tertiary healthcare.
- Formulate and prescribe health care regimens for designated patients.
- Ensure accurate, complete and timely documentation of medical findings, management, progress, follow-up plans, and patient and caregiver interactions in electronic health records, medical reports and other required versions of the patient record.
- Coordinate with specialists and other departments for the transfer and management of patients requiring advanced care.
- Provide technical assistance to other health care professionals in the implementation of DHS health programmes and services.
- Participate in the development and implementation of emergency care protocols and policies.
- Provide critical care management within the Accident and Emergency Unit.
- Perform administrative tasks related to the operation of the A&E department, such as scheduling and resource management.
- Manage the flow of patients through the department to reduce wait times and improve the efficiency of care delivery.
- Lead regular debriefings and case reviews with the A&E team to continually improve care standards.
- Perform other related duties as required by the job function.

PERSONAL QUALIFICATIONS
The incumbent must possess sound knowledge of operations, practices, procedures, standards, specifications and work methods, interpersonal communication, computer skills, and diagnostic ability, be communicative, analytical, with high stress tolerance, adaptiveness, empathy and interpretative judgment.
Such knowledge, skills and abilities are normally obtained through the acquisition of a Medical Degree with a diploma in Emergency Medicine. Applicant should have three (3) years post qualification experience in a similar or related job.
