The Senior Medical Laboratory Technician supports management in overseeing the daily operations of the laboratory team to ensure timely testing and reporting.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. Coordinates the daily operations of the technicians in the Laboratory including testing of patient samples, quality control material, calibration material and ensuring testing is completed in a timely manner
  2. Ensures reports are signed and dispatched to maintain established turnaround times
  3. Reviews test results, performs troubleshooting and takes corrective actions where necessary
  4. Monitors and reviews maintenance procedures and takes corrective actions where necessary
  5. Ensures calibrations and performance checks are done on clinical laboratory equipment.
  6. Provides input for evaluating employees; performs orientation, training and competency assessments of Laboratory Technicians. Train new staff and assist colleagues whenever required.
  7. Ensures adequate staffing is maintained; ensures leave forms are completed, signed and submitted to the HR department in a timely manner
  8. Works with the Laboratory Management Team to ensure the relevant procedures and processes in the Laboratory’s Quality Management System are implemented, monitored and maintained
  9. Performs laboratory testing as required:-
  • Sorting and collection of samples, including logging of all data, billing In-Patient tests, centrifugation, separation and distribution of samples (internally and externally). Analyse samples and reject or accept based on the rejection criteria
  • Process all samples (automated/manual), evaluate results and detect critical values in all departments in the laboratory. Inform relevant stakeholders and issue results in timely manner.
  • Pro-actively troubleshoot issues when they arise and making appropriate decisions; apply critical thinking in the process. For example, in the following areas: failed controls, machine error, maintenance, repeat of certain tests etc.
  • Fill out all logs at the required time, detect any discrepancies and bring to the attention of management.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

KNOWLEDGE

  • Technical knowledge of the principles, methods, materials, equipment and techniques of medical technology in the various areas including Biochemistry, Haematology, Microbiology, Immunology, Blood Banking, Histology, Molecular and Serology
  • Knowledge of international and local laboratory safety standards such as ISO 15189 and OSH Act of Trinidad and Tobago
  • Knowledge of Quality Control methods and principles such as Westgard and Levey-Jennings
  • Laboratory protocols and procedures.
  • Proper use and requirement of PPE in a laboratory setting.

SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

  • Good organization, multi-tasking, trouble-shooting and problem-solving skills
  • Ability to document and communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with internal/external partners.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS, EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING:

  • Associate in Applied Science (A.A.S) or Bachelor of Science (B.Sc.) Degree in Medical Laboratory Technology / related field.
  • Computer Literacy and customer service skills.
  • Minimum of five (5) years working experience in a clinical laboratory that provide core lab services.
  • Supervisory training / experience
  • Experience in a private health care environment will be considered an asset

OTHER:

  • Must be able to work a shift system, weekends and public holidays.
