The Portfolio of Legal Affairs is currently inviting applications for the following post within the Office of the Attorney General:

Senior Legal & Policy Advisor to the Attorney General

CI$108,660.00 - CI$146,124.00 per annum (USD$130,000.00 – USD$175,000.00 approx)

The Senior Legal & Policy Advisor will provide expert legal and policy support to the Attorney General on constitutional, civil, criminal, and international legal matters and in respect of his duties in Parliament, Cabinet, Boards and Committees. The role requires conducting in-depth research, analysing and formulating policy, assessing legal and policy risks, and preparing draft documents including Cabinet submissions and responses on behalf of the Attorney General.

The Senior Legal & Policy Advisor to the Attorney General participates in the legislative process by drafting and reviewing legislation, preparing initial drafting instructions, and supporting documents such as Cabinet papers. Significant policy responsibilities include conducting legal and policy reviews in collaboration with Ministries and stakeholders and developing and evaluating policy options that align with legal standards and the public interest.

Qualifications & Experience:

  • A solicitor, barrister or attorney-at-law, qualified to practice in an English-speaking Commonwealth jurisdiction with at least seven (7) years post-qualification experience.
  • A Bachelor’s degree from a recognized university.
  • Legislative Drafting and Policy Development qualifications would be desirable.
  • A minimum of five (5) years of demonstrated experience in legal research and/or policy development within a legal environment.  
  • Legislative drafting experience.
  • A sound knowledge of the workings of the legal systems in the Cayman Islands, including legal terminology and documentation. 
  • Proven ability to analyse complex legal issues with sound, strategic judgment.
  • Effective oral and written communication skills for a wide range of audiences.
  • Political neutrality, discretion, and impartiality in all matters.
  • Ability to operate at a strategic level, with a strong understanding of governance in the public sector.
