The Snr. Laboratory Technician is responsible to carry out all laboratory analyses related to distillery operations and yeast culturing, as well as recording of all data collected.

Senior Laboratory Technician – Appleton Distillery

(Based in St Elizabeth, Jamaica)

The Company owns two distilleries: New Yarmouth Estate in Clarendon and Appleton Estate in St Elizabeth. Both distilleries account for approximately two-thirds of all spirits produced in Jamaica.

Who We Are Looking For…/ How Will You Make an Impact…

We are seeking a Senior Laboratory Technician to join our Quality department at our Appleton Distillery located in St Elizabeth. This role is responsible to carry out all laboratory analyses related to distillery operations and yeast culturing, as well as recording of all data collected in the appropriate fashion. Reporting directly to the Quality Team Leader - Appleton Distillery, the incumbent works collaboratively with the Distillery Fermenting House staff to ensure that the desired process parameters are being maintained and quality targets are being met.

Key Activities & Responsibilities

The incumbent will be performing the following activities:

• Propagate yeast cultures in laboratory and culture stations
• Perform cell counts on samples from yeast vessels and fermenters
• Carry out analyses on molasses as set out in work instructions
• Carry out analyses on live and dead wash
• Analyze samples from still discharge to detect alcohol loss
• Carry out analysis on rum samples using GC machine and Organoleptic techniques
• Record all results in the appropriate manner
• Analyze domestic water for chlorine levels
• Any other duties considered within scope of work

What Academic Achievements, Competencies and Experiences You Will Need…. 

• Minimum, Associate Degree in the sciences or its equivalent
• Minimum 1 year training and relevant work experience in a Laboratory Environment
• Good interpersonal and leadership skills
• Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in written format
• Good problem solving and analytical skills
• Meticulous with keen attention to details
• Thorough knowledge of the processes carried-out in the Fermenting House
• Capable of conducting sensory evaluation and analysis of quality results
• Competent in the use of MS Office software applications
