Senior Economist

The Planning Institute of Jamaica (PIOJ) is seeking to identify a suitably qualified candidate to fill the position of Senior Economist on a fixed term contractual basis.

Pay Scale: Level 9 - Minimum $6,333,301 p.a.

Main Responsibilities

• Develop Models and Analytical Tools to inform Decision making for Cabinet, Ministry of Finance & Public Services, and other stakeholders
• Organize and implement activities for undertaking in-depth and on-going research and analysis on any economic phenomena.
• Prepare reports on the performance of the economy to inform policy advice aimed at promoting long term economic growth.
• Provide sound technical advice for policy development by monitoring and maintaining comprehensive and current databases on inputs, activities, outputs, outcome and impact indicators.
• Undertake the modelling and forecasting of socio-economic and environment indicators (for example, Gross Domestic Product (GDP).

Qualification and Experience Required:

• Post Graduate degree in Economics/Econometrics or related discipline from a recognized university
• At minimum 3 years’ working experience in the field of economic analysis, model development and public policy
• Experience working in the public sector and/or in large service/community organisations
• An understanding of the strategic issues facing the PIOJ and the Government of Jamaica
• Training in research methodologies and use of statistical applications would be an asset

Knowledge/Skills/Competencies:

• Knowledge of Models and Analytical tools
• Ability to analyze and interpret changes in the economic, political and social environment
• Proficient in software required for economic modelling
• Initiative and Resourcefulness
• Ability to work effectively as part of a team
• Excellent technical writing, public speaking and presentation skills
