The Department of Health Services invites suitably qualified applicants to apply for the position of Senior Dental Surgeon.
Mandate
To plan and direct the provision of preventative and corrective dental care. Treatment and/or surgery for the community so as to ensure the achievement of established oral and dental health standards.
The job carries responsibility for the development, implementation and continuous monitoring/evaluation of dental health policies and programs for the national community so that appropriate behaviors, and practices for improved dental care are adopted, and professional services are provided in a timely, effective manner.
Key Duties
- Provide dental care for adults so as to ensure the establishment of appropriate dental health standards.
- Examine patients for dental and jaw diagnosis.
- Interpret X-ray and diagnostic tests.
- Administer anesthesia.
- Perform general dental procedures, e.g. fillings.
- Perform tooth extractions; simple and surgical.
- Perform surgical procedures on teeth, bone and soft tissue.
- Educate patients on after care and answer questions.
- Perform and complete root canals.
- Diagnose and treat oral disease.
- Create detail treatment plan for patients.
- Provide specialized dental care for the children referred by the Dental Therapist.
- Manage the dental surgery to ensure that services are provided safely, efficiently and in accordance with established professional standards/specifications.
- Liaise with dental professionals and health care officials to promote effective oral and dental health awareness, practices and behaviors.
- Provide technical advice, guidance and direction for the team members so as to ensure that work targets are achieved.
- Provide cover for dental emergencies.
- Prepare operational and informational reports on dental operations as required.
- Maintain appropriate dental records and related correspondence.
- Direct the clinical and administrative functions of the Dental Unit so as to ensure the achievement of established standard, specifications and work targets.
- Develop, recommend and implement dental health policies, programs and promotions to foster the practice of appropriate behaviors and practices in the community.
- Provide a full range of dental services and treatment for adults and children in the community.
- Ensure the effective management of the dental surgery so that established professional standards of safety, proficiency and clinical effectiveness are achieved.
- Ensure the conduct of dental laboratory work and the preliminary stages of denture construction.
- Ensure the maintenance of appropriate dental records.
- Provide technical advice, guidance and direction for subordinate, dental auxiliaries so as to create and maintain effective levels of productivity.
- Plan, organize and conduct staff meetings to coordinate, monitor and evaluate the performance of the unit.
- Liaise with dental professional and health care officials to promote effective oral and dental health awareness, practices and behaviors.
- Represent the ministry/country at dental conferences.
- Prepare operational, informational and statistical reports on dental operations.
- To attend dental emergencies at the Dental Unit and Hospital after working hours and /or weekdays, weekends and Public Holidays.
- Perform other related duties as required by the job function.

PERSONAL QUALIFICATIONS
The incumbent must possess;
- Bachelor of Dental Surgery
- Registration with the UK General Council or recognized international equivalent.
- Vocational training accreditation i.e. clinically up to date with CPD or CE.
- Managerial Qualification.
- Post Graduate qualification in a relevant area.
- Further relevant professional vocational qualifications.
The incumbent must possess extensive theoretical and practical skills in Dentistry, communicative and interpersonal ability, analytical, diagnostic and problem solving skills, effective management skills, ability as well as interpretative judgment.
These knowledge, skills and abilities are normally obtained in the process of acquisition of an appropriate university degree and license in Dentistry/Dental Surgery together with at least six years post qualification experience in a similar or related job two of which should have been at management or senior professional level.
