About the role

The Senior Crown Counsel position within the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions, operates under the direction of the Director of Public Prosecutions, to undertake general legal advisory work and to prosecute and to review complex and serious criminal cases in the superior courts while supervising and rostering a team of Crown Counsel.

This senior position requires prosecuting and reviewing serious criminal cases before the Grand Court and the Court of Appeal. Includes overseeing and providing day-to-day direction to a team of Crown Counsel, reviewing cases in the Summary Court, and advising various Law Enforcement Agencies (LEAs) and government stakeholders. Managing a busy caseload and working to tight deadlines are key aspects of this role.

About you

Applicants for this position should be a Solicitor, Barrister or Attorney-at-Law qualified to practice in an English-speaking Commonwealth jurisdiction. It is also a requirement that applicants possess:

  • At least 10 years post qualification experience in criminal law
  • Substantial experience in prosecuting serious and complex criminal cases at trial and appellate levels
  • Assimilate instructions quickly, conduct independent research and to give clear and accurate advice while working within the Code of Conduct for Prosecutors.
  • Strong advocacy and case management skills with an ability to plead cases effectively before Grand Courts and Courts of Appeal.
  • Excellent drafting, legal research and analytical skills with an ability to provide legal advice and to make decisions, often at very short notice, and when acting under pressure. 
  • Strong inter-personal skills with an ability to deal with witnesses, victims and professional witnesses effectively.

In addition, applicants should also be familiar with the laws and legal systems in the United Kingdom and other Commonwealth Jurisdictions.
