Our Client, The Atlantic LNG Company of Trinidad & Tobago (Atlantic), is seeking to fill the position of Senior Attorney-at-Law.

This is a permanent position based at Atlantic's Port of Spain office, however the Senior Attorney will be required to work from the Point Fortin office as needed.

  

Job Purpose

The Senior Attorney-at-Law is responsible for providing support to the Vice President, Law & Corporate Affairs and the Legal Department in drafting and negotiating agreements, gathering information, researching the law, preparing opinions, legal documents, presentations, training, and reports. The jobholder is also required to identify, manage, and limit the legal risk to the Company as well as their liability to third parties by ensuring that they act within sound corporate governance framework, reporting structures and statutory, regulatory, and contractual requirements. He/She also provides advice on legal issues facing the Company and lends support to the Corporate Secretarial function to maximize the benefits under the Law and Corporate legal administration.

The incumbent works collaboratively with line management and the Corporate Secretary and Members to ensure that appropriate corporate governance advice is provided to the Company. He/she proactively provides timely advice, perspective, and analysis in relation to corporate governance matters, including but not limited to legal and regulatory research, interpretation of legal and regulatory obligations and assessment and analysis of compliance risks and trends. 

The Senior Attorney–at-Law is required to establish and demonstrate a “trusted advisor” relationship with senior members of the Company and to provide them with competent advice, guidance, and direction. The Senior Attorney-at-Law is also required to frequently liaise with senior members of the Shareholders’ Companies in matters impacting the Company and the Shareholders’ Companies. He/She must also be able to ensure the integrity, accuracy and confidentiality of all legal information generated within his/her sphere of accountability, while abiding by statutory and Company requirements. 

  

Principal Accountabilities:

  • Manages and undertakes necessary actions to ensure that the Company’s rights and interests are properly vested and protected.
  • Provides timely, quality comprehensive legal advice to the Company and provides support and advice on managerial matters as required by the Vice President Law & Corporate Affairs to ensure the achievement of the department’s objectives and the corporate strategy.
  • Analyses contracts to assess legal obligations and prepares appropriate legal documents including contracts, opinions, briefs, proposals, and reports.
  • Provides legal advice on complex commercial disputes and on contracts/agreements to ensure that the Company does not enter into agreements that are inimical to its business interests: on related litigation and acts as a liaison with external counsel.

  

Qualifications, Knowledge & Experience:

  • A first degree in Law (LL. B) and a Legal Education Certificate (L.E.C) or equivalent from an accredited, recognised institution.
  • At least ten (10) years of relevant post qualification experience. 
  • Knowledge of the Acts, regulations, instructions, and guidelines pertaining to the energy sector and of the policies and practices of the energy sector. 
  • Extensive knowledge of ethics and compliance related laws, regulations, codes and standards and best practice tools and controls required to ensure continued adherence thereto.
  • Sound knowledge of Company, Oil & Gas, Insurance, Environmental Law, and Civil Litigation is required as well as significant experience in a corporate environment, preferably in the energy sector. 
  • Experience in the Court system will be an asset
