Applications are invited from suitably qualified persons to fill the following position at the North-Central Regional Health Authority (NCRHA):

 

SURGICAL DIRECTOR, NOTU

 

The incumbent is responsible for developing and implementing protocols and policies for the transplant program with the Transplant Nephrologist to ensure regulatory compliance and improve patient outcomes. 

Main Responsibilities:

  • Lead the surgical team in executing renal transplants for both donors and recipients, ensuring adherence to best practices and maintaining high standards of patient care in the operating theatre.
  • Collaborate with surgical, anesthetic and operating theatre teams to determine surgery schedules for both live and deceased donor transplants.
  • Conduct surgical assessments of all potential live donors and recipients.
  • Coordinate with departments such as Radiology to ensure timely pre-and post-operative imaging for both donors and recipients.
  • Ensure, in conjunction with the Operating (OR) team leader, that all necessary supplies are available to surgery.
  • Review clinical information about potential deceased donors in other hospitals to assess their suitability for donation.
  • Collaborate with international colleagues on challenging cases and implement new programs, such as paired exchanges.
  • Supervise and mentor surgical staff, including surgeons, nurses and support staff, fostering a collaborative and efficient working environment.
  • Monitor and evaluate the quality of surgical procedures and patient care, implanting improvements as necessary to enhance program effectiveness.
  • Encourage and participate in research activities and audits to assess and monitor patient outcomes against international   best practices, making necessary changes to achieve those standards.
  • Provide education and training opportunities for medical students, residents, and fellows in renal transplantation.
  • Oversee the pre-operative and post-operative care of transplant patients, including assessment, surgical planning, and follow-up care.
  • Work closely with nephrologists, immunologists, cardiologists, radiologists, pharmacists, and other specialists to ensure comprehensive care for transplant patients.
  • Manage the units’ resources, including budgeting, staffing and equipment, to ensure efficient and effective operations in collaboration with the Medical Director and other team members.
  • Ensure essential supplies such as perfusion fluid, sutures, and stents are ordered in a timely manner in conjunction with Operating Theatre management.
  • Engage with patients, families, support groups, charities, and the broader community to promote the transplant program and support organ donation initiatives.
  • Perform other related duties required by the appropriate organisational relationships. 

Minimum Qualifications, Training and Experience:

  • Postgraduate Degree in the appropriate specialisation.
  • A certificate from a recognised Postgraduate Institution indicating two (2) years in the area of specialisation (where degrees or diplomas are not offered).
  • Minimum of five (5) years of Postgraduate experience/training in the area of specialisation.
  • Qualifications from an approved institution registered with the Medical Board of Trinidad & Tobago.
  • Where sub-specialisation is indicated or required i.e. Nephrology etc., proficiency in this area should be indicated during the Postgraduate training period.
  • A combination of clinical expertise, leadership skills, and a commitment to advancing the field of renal transplantation.

* Certificates acquired at foreign universities MUST be supported by certified transcripts as well as evidence that the completed programme is accredited in Trinidad and Tobago. *
