Research and Development Coordinator
The West Indies Rum Distillery (established in 1893), a leading producer of Barbados rum and rum-based products for local, regional and international makers, is seeking to recruit a highly skilled and self-motivated individual to join the team as a Research and Development (R&D) Coordinator. This role involves enhancing the structure and analytical reliability of the laboratory while steering the blending and aging processes to uphold product quality. The incumbent will be responsible for coordinating R&D initiatives across Barbados and France to ensure a seamless operation.
The Research and Development Coordinator will report to the Managing Director and the Research and Development Manager.
Essential duties include, but are not limited to:
- Structuring, harmonizing and improving the reliability of the laboratory's analytical practices.
- Overseeing and managing the entire blending process.
- Building expertise in blending and tasting.
- Assessing and maintaining the quality of aging rums across various sites.
- Acting as the direct liaison for research and development and between the Barbados and French teams.
Required Qualifications, Experience and Other Competencies/Characteristics:
- A B.Sc. degree in chemical engineering, agronomist engineering, or oenology, biochemistry or microbiology. A master’s degree in any of these fields would be considered an asset.
- Certifications in distillation, sensory analysis and project management are desirable.
- A minimum of five (5) year’s relevant experience in a similar capacity or in an agri-food, chemicals or petrochemicals environment.
- Familiarity with the use of R&D tools such as sensory panels and digital tasting platforms (e.g., TASTEL Web)
- A solid understanding of distillation, blending and aging processes.
- A good command of analytical tools and tasting approaches.
- Advanced proficiency in English Language (the ability to speak French would be advantageous).
- Computer literacy with proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite of applications.
- Excellent numerical, presentation, oral and written communication skills.
- Extraordinary interpersonal skills to work in conjunction with cross-functional teams and external customers.
- Ability to execute and meet deadlines and /or targets in a highly dynamic and high paced environment.
- Must be willing to travel regionally or internationally as needed, and on short notice.
